Vale referral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Harlan\u2019s initials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Vale refer my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Samuel may not have been the father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you\u2019re my half-brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr full brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words struck hard.<\/p>\n<p>Grace whispered, \u201cIf Margaret is Michael\u2019s mother and Samuel is his father, he\u2019s your full brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you remember about Anna?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotographs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one in your office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Harlan ever show you hospital records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBirth certificate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grace looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael sat down heavily in the pew.<\/p>\n<p>For years he had believed himself the son of a dead woman.<\/p>\n<p>Now even that might have been constructed.<\/p>\n<p>I turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>A folded photograph slipped free.<\/p>\n<p>Two women stood outside the clinic.<\/p>\n<p>One was my mother.<\/p>\n<p>The other was Anna Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>They were holding hands.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, my mother had written:<\/p>\n<p>Anna knows everything.
