Margaret realized Samuel intended to pull me deeper into his work.

Not because he needed another mechanic.

Because he needed someone clean.

Someone without a criminal record.

Someone banks trusted.

Someone police would not suspect.

Me.

The Oklahoma contract had been created to establish a separate business account in my name.

A laundering route.

My father had forged more than my adoption signature.

He had been building a financial identity around me for years.

I looked at Ortiz.

“He used my name.”

She nodded grimly.

“We’ll check.”

I returned to the letter.

My mother discovered Rachel’s pregnancy by accident.

She told Samuel the child belonged to someone else.

That lie saved Rachel from him.

But it also convinced Samuel that Rachel could be used as another patient for Vale.

When the twins were born, Margaret realized what she had done.

She tried to stop the adoption.

Too late.

Grace had already been transferred.

Elaine had taken Leah.

So Margaret did the only thing she believed remained possible.

She covered everything.

She forged my signature.

She bribed Vale.

She lied to Rachel.

She lied to me.

She let me mourn a marriage instead of daughters I did not know existed.

Then I reached the final page.

My mother wrote that one more secret had made silence necessary.

Samuel had discovered Leah survived.

He had threatened to kill Elaine and the baby unless Margaret gave him something in exchange.

My hands tightened around the paper.

“What?”

Grace whispered.

I read the line aloud.

“I gave Samuel the thing he wanted most.”

Michael frowned.

“What was that?”

The next sentence answered.

The ledger.

Ortiz stepped closer.

“What ledger?”

I kept reading.

A complete handwritten record of every woman Samuel had brought to Vale.

Every payment.

Every child.

Every false death.

Every forged adoption.

Every transfer.

Everything.

My mother had stolen it.

Then returned it to my father to save Leah.

I turned the page.

One sentence remained.

I made one copy.

And I hid it where Samuel would never look.

The letter ended there.

No location.

No clue.

Nothing else.

I turned it over.

Blank.

Leah said, “Where would he never look?”

I thought of my father.

His habits.

His contempt.

The places he refused to enter.

Then I remembered one thing.

A place he had not stepped inside after my grandfather died.

Not once.

The old church.

I looked at Ortiz.

“I know where she hid it.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The
