Pregnant women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the forged adoption papers.<\/p>\n<p>The private clinic.<\/p>\n<p>The missing records.<\/p>\n<p>The debt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was my father doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cFinding babies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone knocked.<\/p>\n<p>Grace opened the door before I could answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe preliminary DNA panel is back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat fast?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey ran an emergency kinship screen because of the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grace looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re my biological father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence did not feel dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>It felt solid.<\/p>\n<p>Permanent.<\/p>\n<p>I crossed the room.<\/p>\n<p>For one second Grace looked uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Then I pulled her into my arms.<\/p>\n<p>She froze.<\/p>\n<p>After a moment, her arms came around me.<\/p>\n<p>I had imagined fatherhood when I was younger.<\/p>\n<p>I had imagined first words, scraped knees, school plays, arguments over curfews.<\/p>\n<p>I had never imagined meeting my daughter at twenty-six in an oncology ward while uncovering a crime my own father might have helped commit.<\/p>\n<p>Grace pulled back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course there was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey ran Leah\u2019s sample too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Ortiz get one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe volunteered it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grace looked toward Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s my identical twin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel covered her face.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Both daughters.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Then Grace said, \u201cThe lab found something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe twin result is certain.
