Whatever my mother wrote in that letter may be the only explanation left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz studied me.<\/p>\n<p>Then she opened the evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>She handed me the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The paper trembled in my hands.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a confession from a dead woman.<\/p>\n<p>I read until one sentence made me stop.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel had delivered twin girls.<\/p>\n<p>My parents had known about the pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harlan Vale had offered to erase my father&#39;s debts in exchange for arranging one child&#39;s private adoption.<\/p>\n<p>And while Rachel lay unconscious after the delivery, my mother had forged both parents&#39; signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Grace began crying beside me.<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>Then I reached the sentence that changed the story again.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Vale had arranged the sale of only one infant.<\/p>\n<p>According to my mother, the second child had never been part of the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine had taken her.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz waited.<\/p>\n<p>I returned to the letter.<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s explanation was incomplete. She claimed Elaine told everyone the second baby died before sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, however, my mother received a photograph showing Grace beside a young woman identical to her.<\/p>\n<p>On the back were the same words now sitting in the evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>YOU SOLD ONE.<\/p>\n<p>ELAINE KEPT THE OTHER.<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s letter ended with a name.<\/p>\n<p>Leah.<\/p>\n<p>Then one final instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Find her before Elaine does.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the pages.<\/p>\n<p>Grace wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned toward the consultation-room window.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the corridor stood a young woman.<\/p>\n<p>Dark hair.<\/p>\n<p>Gray coat.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-six years old.<\/p>\n<p>For a heartbeat I thought Grace had somehow crossed the room without my noticing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Grace stepped beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Two identical faces looked at each other across the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>Grace stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>She looked past Grace.<\/p>\n<p>Straight at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then she pointed toward Rachel&#39;s room and said the first words I ever heard from my second daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore you decide Elaine is the monster, ask Rachel why she chose which baby to save.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=19919\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Leah\u2019s Accusation Forced Rachel to Relive the Night She Lost Two Daughters and Trusted the Wrong Person<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read the note three times.
