quietly.<\/p>\n<p>No performance.<\/p>\n<p>No request.<\/p>\n<p>I let him.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lena\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She answered.<\/p>\n<p>Listened.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another piece of evidence had been recovered from Samuel\u2019s burial records.<\/p>\n<p>A cemetery worker from fourteen years earlier remembered the private interment.<\/p>\n<p>Someone else attended.<\/p>\n<p>Not Helena.<\/p>\n<p>Not Howard.<\/p>\n<p>A woman.<\/p>\n<p>She signed the visitor register.<\/p>\n<p>The name had just been recovered from archived scans.<\/p>\n<p>Lena looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEileen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the screen.<\/p>\n<p>One signature.<\/p>\n<p>Helen Harper.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>The mother who supposedly died seven years before Frank and I met.<\/p>\n<p>The mother whose grave I had visited for thirty-three years.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly, for
