woke before sunrise because the house had become too quiet.

Not empty.

Quiet.

There is a difference.

Empty is absence.

Quiet still contains everything that happened.

The chair where Frank had sat.

The dent in the wall from the bullet.

The faint rectangle of cleaner paint where the investigators had removed a framed photograph.

The basement door I had spent years avoiding.

The walnut clock on the mantel, ticking as if time had behaved normally all along.

I lay in bed and listened to it.

Tick.

Pause.

Tick.

No sirens.

No gunfire.

No dead relative returning through the front door.

It was almost disappointing.

That frightened me.

Chaos had occupied so much space so quickly that ordinary silence felt suspicious.

I finally got up at six.

The kitchen still smelled faintly of coffee and police gloves.

I opened a window.

Cold morning air came through.

Across the street, Mrs. Hendricks was walking her terrier.

She cabinet.

I reached automatically.

Stopped.

Chose my own.

The phone rang at 6:42.

I stared at it.

My body reacted before my room.

Shelves.

Empty.

A metal table.

Open containers.

Someone had been there recently.

On the far wall, Samuel’s name had been scratched into the concrete.

Below it, another name.

HELEN.

And beneath both:

THE FIRST AGREEMENT WAS NEVER COMPLETED.

Lena found a burned document on the floor.

Only one corner remained readable.

I knelt.

Three signatures.

Samuel Mercer.

Helen Harper.

And a third.

The bottom half was burned away.

Only the first letter remained.

E.

Frank whispered, “Eleanor.”

Maybe.

Then an agent called from outside.

They had found someone in the woods.

Alive.

Injured.

An elderly woman.

For one wild second I expected another resurrection.

It wasn’t.

Eleanor.

My aunt.

Blood on the back of her coat.

She had been shot.

I knelt beside her while agents worked.

Her eyes opened.

“Too late.”

“Who did this?”

She tried to speak.

I leaned closer.

“The file.”

“Who took it?”

Her fingers closed weakly around my wrist.

“Not Gregory.”

“I know.”

“Not Claire.”

“Who?”

She struggled for breath.

Then whispered a name.

“Helena.”

Frank went still behind me.

Eleanor’s grip tightened.

“She lied about everything after Samuel died.”

Then her eyes closed.

The medics lifted her onto a stretcher.

Frank stared at the open archive.

“My mother?”

Lena looked toward the trees.

Helena was supposed to be in federal protection.

Supposed to be safe.

Supposed to be cooperating.

I thought of how many times “supposed to” had failed us.

Then Lena’s phone rang.

Her face changed immediately.

“What?”

She listened.

Ended the call.

“Helena Mercer is gone.”

Frank closed his eyes.

I looked at Samuel’s burned agreement.

My mother.

Samuel.

Eleanor.

The missing Origin File.

Helena.

For the first time, the woman we had treated as a long-term enemy of the network had become the person carrying its oldest secret.

And somewhere in the forest, my mother’s unfinished bargain had just started
