daughter.

My sister had entered the network under Thomas’s sponsorship.

The ring did not prove she was Samuel’s successor.

It proved she had access.

Maybe that was why Howard contacted her six months earlier.

Not because she was merely his daughter.

Because they had been working together for nineteen years.

I remembered birthdays.

Christmases.

Coffee at her kitchen table.

Her complaints about work.

Her divorce.

Her children.

All ordinary.

All apparently after the Lake Crescent fire.

Addressed to Howard.

If Thomas ever discovers Eileen is his daughter, Helen wrote, our younger daughter must never be brought into it.

I stopped reading.

“She was.”

Howard had broken that promise.

Maybe because circumstances forced him.

Maybe because secrecy had become the only language anyone in my family knew.

Reed’s phone rang.

The vehicle used in my sister’s escape had been found abandoned.

No blood.

No signs of struggle.

On the passenger seat was an envelope.

My name.

Again.

Reed had an officer photograph it before opening.

Inside was a motel key card and a note.

Eileen, come could make whoever sent the message believe I was.

The key card belonged to the Olympic View Motor Lodge.

Room 17.

Joanna checked ownership.

The motel was purchased nine years earlier through FJM Property Acquisitions.

Frank’s company.

Everyone looked at him.

He stared at the address.

“I bought fleeing property schemes linked to Crescent.

Room 17 was special.

It had a second exit through a maintenance corridor.

Reed prepared the approach.

Plain clothes.

No marked cars.

Officers positioned at both exits.

I drove there alone in my own car.

At least that was what anyone watching would see.

My hands remained steady on the steering wheel.

That surprised me.

Maybe fear has limits.

After enough impossible revelations, the body stops wasting energy on trembling.

Room 17’s curtains were closed.

I knocked.

No answer.

The key card worked.

Inside, the room smelled of dust and old carpet.

A lamp burned beside the bed.

Howard sat in a chair.

Alive.

His wrists were free.

A bandage covered the cut on his forehead.

He looked older than the father I remembered.

Smaller.

But when he saw me, his face became the face that used to wait beside the school gate when rain started unexpectedly.

“Eileen.”

I did
