the registration form.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched him read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had orchestrated half the impossible events of the previous twenty-four hours suddenly looked like me.<\/p>\n<p>Confused.<\/p>\n<p>Afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Betrayed by his own history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a signature,\u201d Joanna said.<\/p>\n<p>Frank stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Ross muttered, \u201cYou have got to be kidding Thomas\u2019s network survived because they understood that records matter more than faces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank had secretly taken a drinking glass Howard used.<\/p>\n<p>He sent it for DNA testing.<\/p>\n<p>The result confirmed a parent-child relationship between Howard and my sister.<\/p>\n<p>My sister went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>Frank to Thomas Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Even Reed looked startled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow close?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s voice was almost inaudible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Vale and Howard Harper.<\/p>\n<p>Brothers.<\/p>\n<p>One violent.<\/p>\n<p>One gentle.<\/p>\n<p>One my out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer opened something worse.<\/p>\n<p>If Howard and Thomas were brothers, then my mother\u2019s affair with Thomas had occurred inside a family relationship everyone had deliberately hidden.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had married one brother.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had married the other.<\/p>\n<p>Then my mother had an affair with Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Their children had grown up around the consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Diane and I shared Thomas as a father.<\/p>\n<p>My sister and I shared a mother.<\/p>\n<p>Ross\u2014<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was Ross\u2019s biological father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank shook his head slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never tested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Diane did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Margaret lied about everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross\u2019s face went gray.<\/p>\n<p>The doorbell rang.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone froze.<\/p>\n<p>Reed drew his weapon and moved toward the front hall.<\/p>\n<p>A uniformed officer looked through the glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>The officer handed him an evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFound in the abandoned vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed examined the screen.<\/p>\n<p>No passcode.<\/p>\n<p>One recent photograph.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEileen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He brought it to me.<\/p>\n<p>The image had been taken inside some kind of warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Howard sat in a metal chair.<\/p>\n<p>Blood streaked one side of his face.<\/p>\n<p>He was holding that morning\u2019s newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>At least when the photograph was taken.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him, painted on the wall, were three letters.<\/p>\n<p>HMC.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelena Mercer Consulting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank stared at the picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother\u2019s company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Reed noticed the message attached to the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>He read it aloud.<\/p>\n<p>FRANK KNOWS WHERE WE ARE.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my husband.<\/p>\n<p>He looked genuinely terrified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phone rang in Reed\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>He answered on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, all we heard was breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Howard\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Weak.<\/p>\n<p>Ragged.<\/p>\n<p>But unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEileen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees nearly gave way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound escaped him.<\/p>\n<p>Half sob.<\/p>\n<p>Half laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Then another voice came onto the line.<\/p>\n<p>A woman.<\/p>\n<p>Old.<\/p>\n<p>Controlled.<\/p>\n<p>Familiar to Frank before it was familiar to anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>He whispered, \u201cMother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello, Franklin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>His mother, dead for thirty-five years, continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve made quite a
