DNA.<\/p>\n<p>Howard could prove who he was to her.<\/p>\n<p>She had believed him.<\/p>\n<p>Then he told her Thomas was my biological father.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that telling me too early could draw attention from Samuel\u2019s network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo early?\u201d I shouted. \u201cI\u2019m fifty-four years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flinched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, neck.<\/p>\n<p>On it was a small black key.<\/p>\n<p>Not metal.<\/p>\n<p>Electronic.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna recognized it.<\/p>\n<p>Encrypted storage key.<\/p>\n<p>Howard had entrusted her with digital evidence.<\/p>\n<p>My sister said she never accessed it.<\/p>\n<p>He told her not to unless he disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe disappeared,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t you tell us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause somebody fired at your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would seem like an excellent time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid whoever wanted it was here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere?\u201d Diane asked.<\/p>\n<p>My sister looked around the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least one person in this family has been feeding information to Samuel\u2019s network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank said, \u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Howard did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took a step closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said never trust the person who keeps arriving exactly when needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone thought the same name.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron.<\/p>\n<p>Two o\u2019clock.<\/p>\n<p>The trust.<\/p>\n<p>The documents.<\/p>\n<p>The motel.<\/p>\n<p>But Aaron was now tied to a chair.<\/p>\n<p>Unless that too was staged.<\/p>\n<p>My sister removed the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me there\u2019s a computer in an old ranger station near Lake Crescent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The place where everything began.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>The childhood fire.<\/p>\n<p>The missing girl.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Howard.<\/p>\n<p>Frank.<\/p>\n<p>All roads returned there.<\/p>\n<p>Reed organized a team.<\/p>\n<p>This time I refused to remain records.<\/p>\n<p>Audio.<\/p>\n<p>Video.<\/p>\n<p>Corporate filings.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>One document sat at the top.<\/p>\n<p>IF I AM MISSING \u2014 START HERE.<\/p>\n<p>Howard\u2019s voice played.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEileen, if you\u2019re hearing this, I failed to finish something I should have finished when you were a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>He apologized.<\/p>\n<p>For leaving.<\/p>\n<p>For pretending to die.<\/p>\n<p>For letting fear become habit.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said Samuel Mercer was dead.<\/p>\n<p>Actually dead.<\/p>\n<p>He had died in
