Updated 1998 by Howard.

My father had added to her letter after she died.

The realization hurt differently.

My parents had carried this secret together for decades.

They had chosen when I should know.

Apparently their answer had always been later.

My mother began with Thomas.

She did not excuse herself.

She described the affair plainly.

She had been twenty-four.

Unhappy.

Thomas had been charming, reckless, and frightening only in ways she initially mistook for intensity.

When she became pregnant, she ended the relationship.

Howard discovered the truth.

He stayed.

Not because he was weak.

Because he loved her.

And because, in his words, a child was not a debt to be collected.

That line made me cry.

I had spent the night losing one father and discovering another.

Now the man who had raised me became my father more firmly than ever.

My mother did not tell Thomas about me.

Years later, Margaret found old letters.

She confronted Helen.

At first, she was furious.

Then she was afraid.

By 1978, Thomas had become violent.

He had beaten Margaret.

Threatened to take Diane.

Used criminal associates to track her.

My mother decided to help.

The cabin at Lake Crescent belonged to a friend of Howard’s.

They planned Margaret’s disappearance there.

The fire was accidental.

That part shocked everyone.

A kerosene heater overturned during an argument.

Thomas had found them.

He arrived at the cabin unexpectedly.

My mother, Margaret, Howard, Thomas, six-year-old me, and four-year-old Diane were all there.

The newspaper reports had never mentioned him.

My stomach turned.

I remembered flashes.

A man shouting.

Smoke.

A red coat.

A hand pulling me through a window.

Not my father’s hand.

Frank’s.

I stopped reading.

My sister stared.

“What?”

I looked at her.

“Frank was there.”

Reed moved closer.

I kept reading.

Frank had been a young contractor doing renovation work at a nearby lodge.

He saw smoke.

He came running.

He pulled me from the cabin.

Then he went back inside and helped Howard carry Diane out.

That was the first time Frank and I met.

I was six.

He was twenty-seven.

He never told me.

When I met him twenty-two years later, he recognized my name.

Not immediately.

But when I mentioned Lake Crescent, he knew.

My hand shook so hard the pages rattled.

“He knew who I was.”

My sister’s expression changed.

“That doesn’t mean he planned to marry you.”

I continued.

Howard’s addition answered that.

Frank contacted my parents after meeting me.

He told Howard he believed I was the little girl from the fire.

Howard confirmed it.

He asked Frank not to tell me.

My parents wanted the past left alone.

Frank agreed.

At first.

Then he and I fell in love.

Howard wrote that he had warned Frank.

If he married me, the old history might eventually return.

Frank said he understood.

He married me anyway.

My sister looked toward the house.

“All those years.”

“Yes.”

“He remembered saving you?”

“Yes.”

“And never said anything?”

I felt betrayed.

And strangely tender.

The two emotions did not cancel each other.

They sat together painfully.

My mother’s letter continued.

After the fire, Thomas believed Diane had died because Margaret deliberately encouraged that belief.

Frank knew some of the plan but not everything.

He thought Margaret and Diane entered protective relocation through relatives.

He did not know Thomas was my biological father.

That secret came later.

My mother had taken Thomas’s ledgers during the chaos.

She found them in his car.

At first, she meant to use them as leverage to keep him away.

Then she realized what they contained.

Names.

Payments.

Property schemes.

Threats.

Some crimes were old.

Some connected to people who were still powerful.

Howard wanted to turn everything over to police.

Margaret refused.

She believed Thomas would kill them before authorities could protect anyone.

So they split the archive.

My mother hid part.

Margaret hid part.

Frank unknowingly became connected to the remaining pieces through construction jobs tied to the same developers named in Thomas’s records.

That was the link.

Frank had not merely met my family once.

He had spent years unknowingly crossing paths with the network Thomas worked for.

By marrying me, he brought two halves of the old story together.

Howard’s final note had been added after learning I was serious about Frank.

He wrote that Frank was a good man.

But he also wrote something that chilled me.

“If Frank ever begins asking about Crescent Holdings, tell him to stop.”

Crescent Holdings.

I knew that name.

Frank had done contracting work for them in the early 1990s.

Joanna recognized it too.

She had found payments from Crescent-linked accounts to Hawthorne Residential Holdings.

Margaret’s shell company.

The past and present were not separate.

Someone had kept Thomas’s old operation alive.

Reed began photographing each page.

Joanna arrived minutes later.

She examined the ledgers.

Her demeanor changed almost immediately.

“This isn’t just old blackmail.”

She pointed to account codes.

Some matched transfers from Frank’s investment portfolio.

Some matched companies still active.

One matched a development project Ross had worked on.

Ross looked stunned.

“I didn’t know.”

Joanna did not accuse him.

She asked who had introduced him to the project.

He answered after a long pause.

“Mom.”

Diane flinched.

Ross corrected himself.

“Margaret.”

Diane shook her head.

“She introduced me too.”

Years earlier, Margaret had not merely demanded money.

She had steered both of them toward businesses linked to her network.

She had used her children to regain access to Frank’s finances.

The forged deed was not just about my house.

My property sat on land referenced in Thomas’s ledger.

The original parcel had belonged to Crescent Holdings.

There was something beneath it.

Not metaphorically.

Literally.

One ledger page listed an underground storage vault built during Prohibition and later used for document storage.

My house had been constructed decades later over part of the parcel.

Frank knew.

That explained the basement mark on his map.

I remembered Diane drugging me.

My fall.

The basement.

“What were you looking for that day?” I asked her.

Her face emptied.

“I don’t know.”

“Don’t lie now.”

“I’m not.”

Margaret had told her there might be an old safe beneath the foundation.

She instructed Diane to search while I was unconscious.

Diane said she never found it.

Ross stared at her.

“You drugged her to look for a safe you didn’t even know existed?”

Diane snapped back.

“I thought it contained documents that could destroy Dad.”

“Dad or Margaret?”

Diane looked away.

We went inside.

The basement smelled of dust and cold concrete.

I had avoided the stairs since my fall.

Now every step brought back a fragment.

Dizziness.

Diane’s voice behind me.

My foot missing the edge.

Pain.

Then darkness.

Reed examined the wall where Frank’s map had marked an X.

The paneling looked ordinary.

But one section sounded hollow.

Ross found the seam.

Behind it was older brick.

A steel plate had been mortared into the foundation.

No handle.

No keyhole.

Only a round indentation.

Joanna studied the ledgers.

One page contained a sketch.

The brass bird.

I laughed once.

No humor in it.

Frank’s ugly bird.

Back upstairs, I removed it from the bookshelf.

Its base unscrewed.

Inside was a metal disc.

The disc fit the indentation.

Something clicked behind the brick.

A narrow section shifted inward.

Cold air escaped.

Behind the wall was a cavity large enough for one person to crawl through.

Reed entered first.

Then Joanna.

They found shelves.

Most were empty.

One held three file boxes.

Another held a portable safe.

On top of it sat a photograph.

Frank and Margaret.

Recent.

Both smiling.

Not warmly.

Like people who had survived a negotiation.

Written beneath them was a date.

Three days earlier.

On the back:

IF THOMAS IS DEAD, THE SECOND AGREEMENT BEGINS.

Aaron looked at the phrase.

“What second agreement?”

Nobody knew.

Then a car door slammed outside.

Reed drew his weapon.

We all froze.

Footsteps crossed the porch.

One set.

Slow.

Heavy.

Familiar.

The front door opened.

I heard my sister gasp upstairs.

Then a man’s voice said my name.

“Red?”

Every muscle in my body stopped.

Frank.

Alive.

Standing in my living room.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Frank Came Home Alive, but His Explanation Ended When Margaret Arrived With Proof
