Beside me, David’s side of the bed was empty. The mattress still held a shallow impression where he had been, but when I touched it, the fabric was cool. He had not just gotten up.

Downstairs, a lock clicked.

That sound pulled me fully awake.

Our house was quiet at that hour. Even the refrigerator seemed loud before sunrise, and David had always complained if delivery drivers came before eight. Yet I heard the front door swing inward, followed by several low voices that stopped the moment someone crossed the threshold.

I sat up.

“David?”

No answer.

I pulled on the robe hanging over the chair and stepped into the hallway. A faint strip of yellow light climbed the staircase from the kitchen. Someone had turned on the pendant lamps over the island.

Then I heard Brenda.

My mother-in-law did not whisper well. Even when she tried, every sentence carried the confidence of someone accustomed to being heard.

“She needs to understand that this affects everybody.”

I stopped halfway down the stairs.

Another voice answered her.

David.

“I know.”

I gripped the railing.

Six months earlier, I might have walked into that room wondering what emergency had brought Brenda to our house before sunrise. Six months earlier, I still believed unexpected family meetings were about family.

A lot had changed in six months.

My mother had died.

I had buried her on a gray afternoon beneath a cedar tree she had chosen herself.

Then lawyers had begun calling.

Accounts I had never known existed surfaced. Properties appeared in documents bearing my mother’s name. Investments that had quietly accumulated for decades were transferred into an estate structure so complicated that I needed three meetings with attorneys simply to understand what belonged to me.

The final number had made me stare at the page until the digits lost meaning.

Approximately one hundred forty million dollars.

I had told David because he was my husband.

That had been my first mistake.

The second had been believing the expression on his face was shock rather than calculation.

I continued downstairs.

Brenda stood beside the kitchen island wearing a cream coat buttoned neatly to her throat. Her purse rested on one of my stools as if she had come for an appointment. David stood by the coffee machine, fully dressed in dark trousers and a blue shirt.

Neither of them looked surprised to see me.

That frightened me more than the hour.

“What’s going on?”

David glanced at Brenda before answering.

It lasted less than a second.

I noticed anyway.

“Morning,” he said.

“David.”

“I was going to wake you.”

“You didn’t have to. The sky beyond the glass was still black.

“What time would you recommend for sarcasm? Because apparently six in the morning is perfect for financial conferences.”

David exhaled through his nose.

“Can we keep this calm?”

That sentence made something cold move through me.

Whenever David wanted me calm, it usually meant he had already decided what I was supposed to accept.

I crossed the kitchen and poured water into a glass. My hand was steady, although I could feel my pulse in my fingertips.

“Why is Brenda here?”

“She wanted to talk.”

“She has my phone number.”

Brenda pulled out the stool and sat.

“This needed to happen face-to-face.”

“About what?”

Neither answered immediately.

I looked from one to the other.

That was when I noticed the folder beside David’s elbow.

It was not mine.

A legal pad protruded from beneath it, covered with handwriting.
