Marriage, to me, had always required accepting that another person possessed a private interior life.

Now I found myself studying every woman who entered the café.

The place smelled of burnt espresso and warm bread. A commuter dragged a suitcase past the window. Somewhere behind the counter, ceramic cups struck each other in quick, sharp taps.

At one fourteen, Elise walked in.

I recognized her immediately.

Not because she looked like the few photographs I remembered.

Because she was visibly pregnant.

She wore a dark coat open over a loose green dress. Her hair had been pulled into a hurried knot, and shadows sat beneath her eyes. One hand stayed near her stomach as she searched the room.

When she saw me, she stopped.

For a fraction of a second, neither of us moved.

I had imagined this woman during the drive.

In every version, she had been confident.

Beautiful in a polished, threatening way.

Perhaps smug.

Perhaps unapologetic.

The woman standing near the café entrance looked frightened.

That did not make me like her.

It did make hatred more difficult.

She approached the table.

“Nora?”

I wasn’t the question.”

She closed them briefly.

“Last summer.”

The answer landed harder than I expected.

Last summer.

There had been a wedding in June where Felix and I danced under strings of lights until nearly midnight.

A beach weekend in July.

My birthday in August.

Another fertility consultation in September.

Somewhere among those ordinary memories, my husband had begun sleeping with his former girlfriend.

“A year,” I said.

“Almost.”

I looked through the window at a train sliding beyond the station platform.

Felix had kissed me hundreds of times during that year.

He had complained about traffic.

Asked what we should order for dinner.

Forgotten to replace the empty milk carton.

Lived the mundane life of a husband while building another one just outside my view.

“When did you find out you were pregnant?”

“About four months ago.”

“And Felix?”

“I told him the same day.”

Of course she had.

That meant every appointment he attended with me after that date had happened while he knew he had already conceived a child with someone else.

The cruelty of it was so clean that I had trouble absorbing it.

Elise opened her handbag.

“I know you have every reason to hate me.”

“You knew he was reached into her bag and removed a large cream-colored envelope.

The paper was expensive.

Thick.

A law firm’s name appeared in black lettering in the upper corner.

She placed it on the table between us.

“He gave me this three weeks ago.”

I did not touch it.

“What is it?”

“Read long.

I expected some kind of paternity arrangement.

Perhaps a confidentiality agreement.

The first pages discussed financial compensation, nondisclosure provisions, future claims, and restrictions concerning the use of Felix’s family name.

My anger sharpened as I read.

“How much did he offer you?”

“That isn’t the highlighted.

The language became stranger.

There were references to voluntary placement.

Adoption counseling.

Selection of prospective adoptive parents acceptable to the biological father.

I reread the section.

Then again.

My skin began to prickle.

“What is this?”

Elise stared at the
