I remembered that much. There was a window, triggered when the power of attorney was used for certain financial activity involving significant assets.

At the time, the details had bored me.

Now I searched my memory with the concentration of someone trying to reconstruct a map after nightfall.

Martin had explained that if Vanessa attempted a transaction above a certain threshold, an independent service would call me directly.

If I did not answer, they would make a second attempt.

If I still did not answer, they would contact alternate numbers.

And if someone answered for me, they were supposed to ask to speak with me privately.

The safeguard had seemed almost theatrical when he described it.

I remembered joking that no criminal mastermind would be interested in my retirement account.

Martin had not laughed.

“Most financial exploitation isn’t committed by criminal masterminds,” he said. “It’s committed by someone who already has access.”

That sentence had irritated me.

I understood why now.

The difficulty was obvious.

My phone was in Vanessa’s possession.

If the monitoring service called my number, she would see it.

She could decline the call.

She could claim I was asleep.

She could answer and tell them I was unavailable.

What she could not know was what would happen next.

At 9:12 I heard my phone ring downstairs.

The sound was faint through the floor, but I recognized the old-fashioned bell tone Vanessa had mocked me for keeping.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

Then silence.

My heart beat harder.

I moved toward the door.

Stopped.

If I called out, Vanessa would know I was expecting someone.

I forced myself back to the bed.

Less than a minute later, footsteps crossed the kitchen below.

A drawer opened.

Another closed.

Then Caleb’s voice, muffled by distance.

“What was that?”

Vanessa answered, but I could not distinguish the words.

His reply came louder.

“Don’t call them back.”

I felt the blood leave my face.

They knew.

Perhaps not everything.

But enough to recognize the caller.

I remained motionless.

Five minutes passed.

Ten.

At 9:26 the phone rang again.

This time it stopped after one ring.

They had silenced it.

I looked toward the window.

The lawn below was still too far.

But the house next door stood closer than I had noticed the night before.
