hate him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roy laughed harder.<\/p>\n<p>Sandra was crying and laughing at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The note continued.<\/p>\n<p>Tell her I am not asking because she is better than my children.<\/p>\n<p>I am asking because she is the only person among us who has spent nine years trying not to control anything.<\/p>\n<p>That may make her the safest person to hold something temporarily.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had written one final sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Helen, you do not have to say yes.<\/p>\n<p>But do not say no simply because you are afraid they will think you took too much.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Roy.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sandra.<\/p>\n<p>Neither looked angry.<\/p>\n<p>Roy shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d trust you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandra nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo would I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was almost worse.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Arthur\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since his death, the decision was entirely mine.<\/p>\n<p>Not a command.<\/p>\n<p>Not a condition.<\/p>\n<p>Not a trap.<\/p>\n<p>A choice.<\/p>\n<p>And Arthur had finally left me free to make it.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
