became cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what your mother wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither do you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur wasn\u2019t your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandra closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The cruelty Arthur had feared.<\/p>\n<p>Not truth.<\/p>\n<p>Weaponized truth.<\/p>\n<p>When Sandra opened her eyes, they were dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, he was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe packed my lunches. He taught me to drive. He sat beside me in the emergency room when I broke my wrist. He paid for things I didn\u2019t even know he paid for. He lied to me sometimes because he was afraid. He made mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice remained steady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he was my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel breathed heavily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what am I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandra looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Then Roy.<\/p>\n<p>Then the twenty-two envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer seemed to hurt him more than rejection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hope entered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeet me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandra hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Katz, now listening through Roy\u2019s second phone, shook his head urgently.<\/p>\n<p>Sandra understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel gave an address.<\/p>\n<p>A roadside diner twenty miles outside town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow. Noon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandra looked at Roy.<\/p>\n<p>Then me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately the detective spoke through Roy\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not going there alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandra exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police began planning.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel believed he had arranged a private meeting with the daughter he had spent decades avoiding, approaching and exploiting by turns.<\/p>\n<p>He did not know law enforcement had heard every word.<\/p>\n<p>He did not know Claire was speaking.<\/p>\n<p>He did not know police had the Meditron records.<\/p>\n<p>And he did not know what Sandra had decided before answering him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to say?\u201d Roy asked.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Arthur\u2019s envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she turned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Daniel is arrested tomorrow, this isn\u2019t over, is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew what she meant.<\/p>\n<p>The estate.<\/p>\n<p>The twenty-two envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>Roy\u2019s restitution.<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s confession.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s wills.<\/p>\n<p>The grandchildren\u2019s conditional inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s unfinished emotional accounting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandra nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roy frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor once, I don\u2019t want the fastest ending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She picked up the next envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want the right one.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=18971\">Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Sandra Walked Into the Diner Knowing Police Were Watching, but Daniel Arrived With Proof That Arthur Had Hidden One Final Decision From Everyone<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read Arthur\u2019s final sentence until the words blurred.
