More likely half-sibling or uncle-nephew depending age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was only a few years younger than Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Half-sibling made sense.<\/p>\n<p>Same father.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur Vale.<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>The thought was impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor could not be Thomas\u2019s mother if Arthur was his father.<\/p>\n<p>That would mean\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Michael went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis cannot be right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen whispered, \u201cPierce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen looked horrified for the first time since I met him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used stored samples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce had used Arthur Vale\u2019s genetic material to impregnate Arthur\u2019s own daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was the product of medical assault and incest engineered without Eleanor\u2019s knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>I could barely breathe.<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen whispered, \u201cI did not order that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed him.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he deserved trust.<\/p>\n<p>Because the horror on his face was too immediate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Pierce do it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael asked.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo create the strongest possible trust claimant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A child biologically descended from Arthur through both maternal and paternal lines.<\/p>\n<p>A grotesque attempt to manufacture inheritance power.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Another engineered heir.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe left the lake house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Eleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe heard the DNA results through the police radio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere would he go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor came onto the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was breaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is going to Pierce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the glass at the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce was held two floors below.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Thomas say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he finally knows why Pierce kept him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo use him as the only key no one else could replace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then an alarm began outside Stephen\u2019s room.<\/p>\n<p>Michael opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>Officers ran down the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Radio traffic exploded.<\/p>\n<p>A prisoner transport elevator had stopped unexpectedly.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce\u2019s guard was not responding.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Michael.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>We ran.<\/p>\n<p>By the time we reached the service level, the elevator doors were open.<\/p>\n<p>One officer lay unconscious.<\/p>\n<p>The other was alive but bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce was gone.<\/p>\n<p>On the wall, written in blood, were five words.<\/p>\n<p>HE MADE ME TO OWN ME.<\/p>\n<p>Below them:<\/p>\n<p>ST. AGNES.
