tightened.

“Tell me what?”

Eleanor did not answer.

Thomas’s voice hardened.

“Tell him why you stayed with me after you learned I was not stayed.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked at Thomas.

“Because he was my son too.”

Thomas’s jaw tightened.

“Say the rest.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“What rest?”

I asked.

Thomas picked up the pistol.

Not pointing it.

Just holding it.

“She did not leave me in 2004 because Margaret told her about you.”

“Then why?”

Eleanor began crying.

Thomas answered for her.

“She left because Pierce made her choose.”

I stared.

“Choose what?”

“Which son he would me.

“Yes.”

Thomas laughed once.

“There.”

His eyes filled.

“That is what I wanted you to hear.”

I looked at Eleanor.

“You chose to protect me by leaving him.”

“Yes.”

“Did Thomas know why?”

“No.”

He me.

“Nothing.”

“Then why bring me here?”

He turned toward Eleanor.

“I want her to choose again.”

Eleanor’s face collapsed.

“No.”

Thomas placed the pistol on the table.

Then reached into his coat.

Two envelopes.

He set one before me.

One before himself.

“Pierce left these.”

“What are they?”

“DNA results.”

My stomach tightened.

“Whose?”

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

“Mine.”

Eleanor stared at the envelope.

Thomas continued.

“Pierce lied about my mother.”

He looked at me.

“Marianne Pierce did not give birth to me.”

“Then who did?”

He pushed the envelope toward Eleanor.

“Open it.”

Her hands shook.

She tore the seal.

Read.

Stopped breathing.

I stepped toward her.

“What?”

She looked at Thomas.

“No.”

“What does it say?”

Thomas’s expression had become unreadable.

“Tell him.”

Eleanor looked at me.

Then at Margaret.

Finally back at Thomas.

Her voice came out broken.

“Thomas is my biological son.”

Nobody moved.

I heard the lake outside.

One bird calling somewhere beyond the glass.

My heart hammering.

“That is impossible.”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Thomas looked at me.

“Apparently not.”

I took the report.

Maternal relationship probability greater than 99.99%.

Eleanor Vale.

Thomas Pierce.

I stared at the paper.

“You had another child.”

Eleanor shook her head violently.

“No.”

“You did.”

“I would
