Arthur\u2019s son died young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another false death.<\/p>\n<p>Another identity erased.<\/p>\n<p>Another person supposedly gone.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen whispered, \u201cChild Seventy-Five was not a baby from 1994.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why is there a date?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe year his identity was rewritten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse hammered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur Vale\u2019s biological son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother had told me Arthur\u2019s son died before I was born.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently he had not.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he is the one who sent Margaret the letter about Celeste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Marcus now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen breathed heavily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk the woman standing behind you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet was looking toward the dark end of the station corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps approached.<\/p>\n<p>A man emerged from behind the old ticket booths.<\/p>\n<p>Mid-fifties.<\/p>\n<p>Gray coat.<\/p>\n<p>Calm expression.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized him from a photograph Raymond had shown me earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus Bell.<\/p>\n<p>The supposedly dead investigator.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped ten feet away.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Cole raised his weapon.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus lifted both hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is not Marcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Michael Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet whispered, \u201cArthur Junior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are Eleanor\u2019s brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sister was fake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used Celeste\u2019s name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo force Raymond to keep digging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anger hit me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou manipulated all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You chose to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Fair.<\/p>\n<p>He did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy fake your death?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Stephen killed my father and came for me next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur died of a stroke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked at the original ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father was murdered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy Stephen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s gaze shifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward Harriet.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael answered anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words seemed to stop the air.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother killed Arthur?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael reached inside his coat slowly and withdrew a sealed cassette.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Arthur\u2019s final recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could not move.<\/p>\n<p>Michael placed it on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe explains what Margaret did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did not murder him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why say\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe helped him die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The relief disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked her to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the cassette.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked toward the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Arthur believed Stephen would torture him for the location of the archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mom agreed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he trust her with that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s eyes held mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Margaret was not simply his former wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was the person he chose to inherit control of the entire Vale network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe criminal network?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evidence network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he said the sentence that changed the direction of everything again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother spent the last eighteen years of her life secretly identifying every stolen child she could find.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=18876\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Arthur\u2019s Final Recording Turned My Mother\u2019s Secret Work Into Evidence, but It Also Revealed Who Had Betrayed Her First<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Priya did not deny it.
