I attended the service. I watched it lowered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas the coffin open?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo another false death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet sat down.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, she looked old.<\/p>\n<p>Not merely elderly.<\/p>\n<p>Defeated by the machinery she had helped build.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPierce taught us that records mattered more than bodies,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed that until it was your turn to be fooled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A burst of radio chatter came from the hall.<\/p>\n<p>Police were moving floor by floor.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond asked where Pierce would go.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPharmacy first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe will need something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor himself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Stephen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is wrong with Stephen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d Priya asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerminal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Cross\u2014the man who had apparently orchestrated decades of fraud, coercion and violence\u2014was dying.<\/p>\n<p>I expected satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>There was none.<\/p>\n<p>Only urgency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he is dying,\u201d I said, \u201cwhy does the archive matter now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he does not intend to leave it behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe intends to erase everyone who could open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>Every remaining branch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could destroy the physical evidence,\u201d Priya said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur duplicated everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Vale archive was apparently distributed through separate repositories.<\/p>\n<p>One required the heir.<\/p>\n<p>Another required the registry.<\/p>\n<p>A third could only be opened through information in Locker 214.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had created redundancy because he knew people around him were compromised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Locker 214 contains a name,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt contains more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Stephen does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows enough to fear it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound came from the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Running footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Then a man shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Another gunshot.<\/p>\n<p>The lights went out completely.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond\u2019s monitors switched to battery backup.<\/p>\n<p>Priya pushed the door shut and moved a chair beneath the handle.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste raised her pistol.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie stood near the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still have that key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held it up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Pierce reaches us, do not let him see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The handle moved.<\/p>\n<p>Once.<\/p>\n<p>Twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>A voice spoke through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarriet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce.<\/p>\n<p>Even after thirty years, she knew his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarriet, Stephen is finished. You know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste stepped beside the door.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe will kill all of you before morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are helping him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the same reason you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>He knew I was inside.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce spoke my name again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou deserve to know what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Every person who had lied to me had said some version of that eventually.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste whispered, \u201cDo not answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur did not create the second registry to expose the adoption network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That got everyone\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was it for?\u201d I asked before I could stop myself.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste glared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce laughed softly outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood. Raymond taught you curiosity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad spoke from the bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo to hell, Harold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill alive, Raymond?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisappointed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Relieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce said, \u201cYou are the only one left who knows Margaret\u2019s confession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat confession?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the worst possible answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat confession?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce spoke through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him who ordered the nursery emptied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 1993, Margaret did not simply rescue Celeste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told police where the children were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe contacted someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. She contacted Stephen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste stared at Harriet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Harriet whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret made a bargain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond tried to sit up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant, do not believe him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat bargain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe offered Stephen the original Vale registry in exchange for Celeste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that true?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His silence became an answer.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe traded evidence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was trying to save you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste turned away.<\/p>\n<p>The pistol lowered.<\/p>\n<p>All the certainty in her face disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gave Stephen the registry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA registry,\u201d Raymond said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur had already made copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man outside sounded almost pleased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret deceived everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet said, \u201cIncluding Stephen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had apparently delivered a partial registry.<\/p>\n<p>Enough to convince Stephen.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough to destroy the case Arthur had built.<\/p>\n<p>Then she took Celeste.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen later discovered the deception.<\/p>\n<p>From that point forward, Margaret, Raymond and Celeste lived under constant threat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Mom knew the whole time,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew pieces,\u201d Raymond said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew enough to lie to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not stay six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words carried no defense.<\/p>\n<p>That somehow made them worse.<\/p>\n<p>Priya asked through the door, \u201cPierce, why did you fake your death?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Stephen believed I had another copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste raised her pistol again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not getting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A buzzing sound came from the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>The electronic lock clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce had overridden the door.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste aimed.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened two inches.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped against the chair.<\/p>\n<p>A gun appeared through the gap.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste fired first.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce fired back.<\/p>\n<p>The bullet struck the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Priya dragged Natalie behind the bed.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled Raymond\u2019s mattress lower.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet shouted something.<\/p>\n<p>Then the door slammed inward.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce entered.<\/p>\n<p>He was older than the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Thin.<\/p>\n<p>Gray-haired.<\/p>\n<p>But his eyes were steady.<\/p>\n<p>Blood stained one sleeve where Celeste\u2019s bullet had grazed him.<\/p>\n<p>He aimed at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not move.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste aimed at his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shoot him, I shoot you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI delivered you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste\u2019s hand trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt St. Agnes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou pronounced me dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen kept me alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Stephen paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She almost fired.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce\u2019s expression changed when he looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>There was history there.<\/p>\n<p>More than colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>More than criminals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have stayed dead,\u201d Harriet said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo should you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do with Harold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question confused me.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband discovered the wrong file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you kill him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce\u2019s smile vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocker 214.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet stared at at me.<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>Do not.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>The shame on his face.<\/p>\n<p>The warning.<\/p>\n<p>Do not sign anything.<\/p>\n<p>Then I thought about how many times he had chosen fear over truth.<\/p>\n<p>How many people had done the same.<\/p>\n<p>I held up the key.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce\u2019s eyes followed it.<\/p>\n<p>Then I threw it toward Harriet.<\/p>\n<p>She caught it.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce turned.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste fired.<\/p>\n<p>The shot hit him in the shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>He fell.<\/p>\n<p>Police flooded the corridor seconds later.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Cole kicked Pierce\u2019s gun away and pinned him.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet remained frozen.<\/p>\n<p>The key rested in her palm.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce looked up at her from the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to know why Harold vanished?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe found Child Seventy-Four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce smiled through the pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only child Stephen never knew existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Seventy-Four?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>His gaze settled there.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, Douglas never told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet looked horrified.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce answered anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChild Seventy-Four was born in 1988.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One year after me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother unknown on the ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked directly at Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather listed as Douglas Brennan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie whispered, \u201cMy father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already know her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce said one name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPriya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every person in the room turned.<\/p>\n<p>Priya Desai stood beside Raymond\u2019s bed, perfectly still.<\/p>\n<p>Her face had become unreadable.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce laughed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk your attorney why she
