Harriet stood beside his bed, one hand still holding the emptied syringe, the other resting calmly on the rail as though she were a nurse adjusting medication instead of the woman who had helped steal children from their mothers.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie pressed the brass key into my palm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop yelling. She wants you emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I spun toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me she was waking him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya was already working at the electronic door panel. The hospital lockdown had frozen most badge-controlled entrances. Red emergency lights pulsed across her face every few seconds, turning the corridor into alternating shadows and warning.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the room, Harriet leaned over Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>His mouth moved.<\/p>\n<p>She lifted his oxygen mask.<\/p>\n<p>I could not hear what he said through the glass.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harriet held up the photograph again.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste Vale\u2014Transfer Failed.<\/p>\n<p>The girl looked about six.<\/p>\n<p>Her hair was dark. Her expression was wary rather than frightened. A bruise marked one knee. Behind her stood three other children, all arranged against a concrete wall as if someone had ordered them into position.<\/p>\n<p>A number had been written above each head.<\/p>\n<p>The girl called Celeste had 31.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father had a ledger with numbers like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat numbers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEntries. Each child had a number before the file was closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClosed how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never found that part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya stopped working on the panel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in her voice made me turn.<\/p>\n<p>A green light had appeared beside the stairwell.<\/p>\n<p>The lock on Raymond\u2019s room clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet opened the door from the inside.<\/p>\n<p>She stood there facing us.<\/p>\n<p>No gun.<\/p>\n<p>No weapon visible.<\/p>\n<p>Only the syringe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I wanted him dead,\u201d she said, \u201cyou would already be planning his funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped toward her.<\/p>\n<p>Priya caught my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you give him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedication to reverse what the hospital gave him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet looked at Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk her why Raymond was sedated again after he regained consciousness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet smiled without warmth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat phrase is becoming expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved past Priya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you touch him again\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need him awake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause only Raymond knows what Margaret did with the second registry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe woman who raised you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet studied me, then nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat loyalty may be the only decent thing anyone in this family managed to preserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to strike her.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I asked, \u201cWho is Celeste?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet\u2019s gaze shifted toward the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA child who was never meant to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie whispered, \u201cShe was born after Grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Eleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why Vale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause names were useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet stepped backward into Raymond\u2019s room.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s eyes were clearer now.<\/p>\n<p>His voice came rough beneath the oxygen mask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I crossed to him.<\/p>\n<p>His hand felt cold when I took it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>For one second I thought he might refuse.<\/p>\n<p>Then he opened them again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret found her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNineteen ninety-three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six years after I was born.<\/p>\n<p>Dad swallowed carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother received a letter. No return address. Inside was a photograph and a key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe brass key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA key like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet leaned against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond looked at her with hatred so old it seemed almost tired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret followed the instructions in the letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo St. Agnes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the old service wing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas the nursery there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>She had gone completely still.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of St. Agnes had already closed. The maternity program was gone. But the lower level remained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Mom find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>A monitor quickened.<\/p>\n<p>Priya stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe may need to slow this down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Raymond said.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou deserve the whole thing now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret found files first. Then she heard someone crying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were children there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCeleste?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to the others?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s eyes dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet answered from the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond\u2019s head turned sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet\u2019s expression did not change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth does not become yours because you regret arriving late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s hand clenched around mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret brought Celeste out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe used a maintenance passage Arthur had shown her years earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That brought us back to the photograph of Margaret and my biological grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Arthur know the building?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he financed part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya asked, \u201cAnd Margaret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret had been married to Arthur because he helped her escape someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStephen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>My biological father.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had known where I was for decades.<\/p>\n<p>The man who watched my wedding.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had just tried to exchange Raymond for the Vale archive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom knew Stephen before Eleanor did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond shifted painfully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Margaret was twenty-two, Stephen handled money for one of the factories where she worked. He began seeing her. Then controlling her. She left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd married Arthur?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it a real marriage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond\u2019s expression softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn its own way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe cared about her. She trusted him. But they never lived as husband and wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why marry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStephen was threatening her. Arthur believed marriage would give her legal protection and financial independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Harriet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Stephen know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that is why he targeted Arthur?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret left Arthur after two years. They divorced quietly. She met me later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot when we married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did she tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter you were placed with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every answer opened another locked room.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the photograph again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Mom rescue Celeste?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she recognized the system,\u201d Raymond said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat system?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same codes used on your paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya took out her phone and began taking notes.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said Margaret understood that children who could not be transferred normally were being held until records could be manufactured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransferred to whom?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamilies. Buyers. Sometimes institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if no one wanted them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one responded.<\/p>\n<p>The absence of an answer was worse than one.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped toward Harriet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou helped build this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe anything you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you will need me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo find the nursery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just told us where it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet turned to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I told you where it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The old lower level beneath St. Agnes had been sealed after a flood in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Harriet claimed the true records had been moved before then.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret said they left something behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA registry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second registry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriet looked at the brass key in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the stamped number.<\/p>\n<p>214.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does this open?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the nursery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said the nursery moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe physical room did.
