Dead leaves covered the path. Newspapers had accumulated beside the porch.

No car.

No lights.

No movement.

Priya gripped the steering wheel.

“We wait for police.”

“And tell them what?”

“That your home was burglarized and the intruder directed you here.”

“What if Claire sent it?”

“What if Natalie did?”

I looked toward the house.

Twenty-four hours earlier, my life had contained one father, one dead mother and one difficult marriage.

Now every category had split open.

“I’m going in.”

Priya muttered something under her breath, reached behind her seat and handed me pepper spray.

“This is reckless.”

“I know.”

“That does not make it intelligent.”

We approached together.

A camera above the front door blinked green.

Someone knew we had arrived.

I knocked.

Nothing.

Again.

“Claire Dawson? Silver threaded her dark hair.

But I knew her immediately.

Those eyes.

That chin.

The raised eyebrow.

The photograph had not lied.

“Eleanor?”

Her hand covered her mouth.

“No one has called me that in twenty-two years.”

My knees weakened.

Priya caught my arm.

Eleanor looked past us.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“Someone told me to come.”

Her expression changed.

“That wasn’t me.”

Cold moved through my chest.

“Then who?”

“I don’t know. Get inside.”

She locked the door behind us.

The house looked temporary, almost anonymous. Heavy curtains covered every window. Few personal objects were visible.

One exception sat on a table.

A framed photograph of a newborn wrapped in blue.

I walked toward it.

“Is that me?”

Eleanor nodded.

“The only picture I had.”

“A nurse took it?”

“Yes. She sent it years later.”

“You knew I survived?”

“Eventually.”

Her voice cracked.

“At first they told me you were dead.”

I sat down.

Priya remained standing.

She introduced herself and immediately asked whether Eleanor had contacted Natalie.

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“No. Natalie contacted me.”

“When?”

“Six weeks ago.”

“What did she want?”

“To convince me to remain dead.”

Eleanor retrieved several envelopes.

The first contained a demand that she stay away from me.

With it came a fifty-thousand-dollar check from Brennan Estate Holdings.

Natalie’s maiden name was Brennan.

The second envelope contained a photograph of Eleanor leaving a store.

A warning had been written beneath it.

Someone knew where she lived.

The third contained my wedding photograph with Natalie marked prominently.

“Did you respond?”

“Once.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That I had already surrendered enough years to fear.”

Priya sat forward.

“Tell us about Douglas Brennan.”

Eleanor folded her hands.

“My father was Arthur Vale.”

I knew the name.

Vale Industrial had once been one of the state’s largest manufacturers.

Arthur’s son had died young, leaving Eleanor as his surviving child.

When Eleanor became pregnant, Arthur created a trust for the baby.

“My baby,” I said.

“You.”

“Who was my biological father?”

“Stephen Cross.”

He had been a financial adviser connected to the family.

Older than Eleanor.

Charming.

Ambitious.

Arthur eventually discovered that Stephen had stolen from previous clients.

Stephen disappeared before I was born.

“Alive?”

“I don’t know.”

The answer meant less than I expected.

Raymond was my father.

Whoever supplied the DNA was, for now, merely another unanswered question.

“And Douglas?”

“My father’s attorney.”

The same Douglas Brennan who later became Natalie’s father.

Eleanor explained that Douglas had arranged the hospital when she went into labor.

I was born healthy.

She held me briefly.

Then a nurse claimed I was struggling to breathe and carried me away.

Hours later, a doctor said I had died.

Eleanor had lost significant blood and remained heavily sedated.

By the time she could think clearly, documents had been completed.

She had never signed adoption papers.

Priya asked for evidence.

Eleanor brought out a metal case.

Inside were decades of records.

One document claimed Eleanor had surrendered me twelve hours after delivery.

She said she had been unconscious at the time.

The witnesses were Douglas Brennan and Dr. Harold Pierce.

The same doctor appearing in Raymond’s records.

“Why would they give me to Raymond?”

Eleanor showed me financial transfers.

Money had moved from Vale-related accounts into an adoption agency and medical foundation.

Then I saw another check.

Raymond Mercer.

Fifteen thousand dollars.

My stomach tightened.

“Natalie mentioned a payment.”

“I know.”

“Did Raymond know?”

“I cannot tell you.”

“He accepted fifteen thousand dollars.”

“Yes.”

The urge to defend him fought with the evidence in my hands.

People did not accidentally receive money after adopting someone else’s stolen child.

Eleanor reminded me that Raymond and Margaret had been poor at the time.

The payment could have been presented as relocation assistance.

Or something darker.

I walked toward the curtained window.

“After you discovered I was alive, what happened?”

Eleanor told us about Harriet Cole.

A nurse from the hospital.

In 2003, Harriet contacted her claiming she was dying of cancer and wanted to confess.

She admitted carrying me from the hospital through a service exit.

She provided the photograph of me.

She also named St. Agnes.

Eleanor began investigating.

The deeper she went, the more dangerous it became.

Her brake line was cut.

A truck forced her from a road.

After that, Eleanor abandoned her identity.

In 2004, Eleanor Vale effectively died.

Claire Dawson took her place.

“What happened to Harriet?”

“Supposedly dead.”

“Supposedly?”

“After everything I learned, I stopped trusting death certificates.”

Priya asked about Marcus Bell.

Eleanor’s face tightened.

The investigator had approached her recently.

He claimed someone was trying to reconnect her with me.

Two weeks later, Eleanor was told Marcus had died.

“Who told you?”

“A woman.”

“Name?”

“Celeste.”

I exchanged a glance with Priya.

Dad believed Celeste was Eleanor’s sister.

Eleanor had apparently never said that.

Before we could explore it, glass shattered in the back of the house.

Priya dropped behind the sofa.

I pulled Eleanor down.

Footsteps moved through the kitchen.

A masked man entered carrying a metal bar.

He went directly toward Eleanor’s case.

Not toward us.

The evidence.

I sprayed him.

He recoiled, swinging blindly.

Priya grabbed a lamp and struck his arm.

The metal bar crashed to the floor.

He shoved me into the wall and fled through the broken door.

I chased him outside.

A dark vehicle disappeared between the trees.

When I returned, Eleanor was checking the case.

One folder had been disturbed.

Nothing obvious was missing.

Priya called police.

Then Eleanor noticed something lying beneath the broken glass.

A photograph.

It showed four men standing together outside St. Agnes in 1987.

Douglas Brennan.

Dr. Pierce.

Stephen Cross.

And Raymond Mercer.

My father.

On the back, someone had written a date.

Three months before my birth.

Raymond had known the men involved before I was born.

A second line had been added beneath the date.

Raymond Mercer agreed to identify the buyers.

I read it twice.

“What buyers?”

Eleanor’s face had gone pale.

“I don’t know.”

My phone vibrated.

A video arrived from an unknown number.

Raymond appeared on the screen.

He was sitting upright in his hospital bed.

At first I thought it was live.

Then I noticed someone standing behind him.

A person wearing hospital scrubs.

The image shifted.

Raymond was unconscious.

A gloved hand entered the frame and held a sheet of paper beside his face.

Bring Eleanor and the original records to Brennan Estate Storage at midnight.

No police.

The camera moved closer.

A final document filled the screen.

My birth certificate.

Father: Raymond Mercer.

I stopped breathing.

Eleanor whispered, “That cannot be right.”

Then the video ended.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: A Birth
