There is no \u2018my\u2019 money when you feel like giving it away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ignored him and held out the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie moved between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, embarrassment gave way to something colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou seem very interested in what I need the money for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou walked into our home asking for cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout explaining why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don\u2019t act offended when somebody asks questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad studied her for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Something unspoken seemed to pass between them.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed it because Natalie noticed it too.<\/p>\n<p>Her face lost a little color.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cMaybe you already know why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie\u2019s posture stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that supposed to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you understand perfectly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie laughed again, but this time the sound was forced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course. Make some mysterious accusation and then refuse to explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad reached for the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll repay every dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed it in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d he said. \u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked directly at Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if everything goes the way I hope, this will be the last time I ever need anything from either of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would be nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could not believe she had said it.<\/p>\n<p>Neither could Dad.<\/p>\n<p>His expression barely moved, but his fingers closed around the envelope until the paper bent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, it isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Before stepping outside, he turned back toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf somebody asks you to sign anything in the next few days, don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything financial. Anything involving your accounts, the house, insurance, authorization forms. Read everything yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie\u2019s voice came from behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow you\u2019re giving him financial advice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromise me, Grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>Then he left.<\/p>\n<p>I watched him walk through the rain toward his battered truck, one hand pressed against the pocket holding the money.<\/p>\n<p>When I closed the door, Natalie was standing behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was about to ask you the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She walked into the kitchen and picked up her coffee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s manipulating you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you always feel responsible for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know that\u2019s not true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows exactly which buttons to push.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe barely said anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s how he does it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed from disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had spent most of his life refusing help. After Mom died, I had begged him to move closer to us. End of story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t feel like the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s because Raymond likes drama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t talk about him like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment neither of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then she picked up her plate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are impossible when it comes to your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She carried the dishes to the sink and went upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>At ten thirty that night, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>The number was unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>I almost ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>Something made me answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs this Grant Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Valley Regional Hospital. Your father, Raymond Mercer, was brought into the emergency department approximately forty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood so quickly the chair behind me fell over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe experienced a medical emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has an aortic aneurysm. The surgical team is preparing an emergency procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to contract around me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he conscious?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was when paramedics arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I talk to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is being prepared for surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed my keys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father asked us to contact someone else as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn attorney. Priya Desai.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he call an attorney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m afraid I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was already moving toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then the woman said one more thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Mercer, your father was carrying an envelope when he arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has your name on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say what was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. But he was very clear that it should only be given to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie was still out.
