was altered.”

“By whom?”

“Unknown.”

“Who was the child?”

“We don’t have a name yet.”

Daniel looked at my face.

“What?”

I covered the phone.

“Victor may have another child.”

His eyes more.”

“This one matters.”

“Tell me.”

“The birth occurred in 1978.”

“So the child would be forty-eight.”

“Yes.”

“Male or female?”

“Male.”

I did the arithmetic.

Victor had spent seventeen years destroyed by Laura’s death.

Believing she was his only child.

Believing Bell had taken even biology from him.

All while another son may have existed somewhere.

“What happened to the baby?”

“We’re tracing adoption records.”

“Adoption?”

“Diane apparently surrendered the child do?”

“She changed the birth outcome from live birth to fetal loss.”

“Why?”

“No explanation.”

Daniel looked toward me.

If Victor learned this, everything could change again.

Not the charges.

Not Laura.

Not Marianne.

But the story he had told himself about his life.

The idea that Bell had stolen his only child’s bloodline.

The belief that Laura’s death ended everything.

“What do we do?” Daniel asked.

I thought of Patricia’s letter.

Stop deciding for everyone.

“First,” I said, “we find out what’s true.”

“And then?”

“If there is a living son, he gets the choice.”

“To meet Victor?”

“To know.”

Daniel nodded.

Then my phone received a message from Elaine.

One scanned adoption intake sheet.

Infant male.

Mother: Diane Hale.

Father: not listed.

Placement arranged privately.

Adoptive surname:

Porter.

I stared at the name.

Elaine Porter.

My attorney.

My friend through every step of the lottery.

The woman who told me three months ago to keep my fortune secret until I understood my own life.

I slowly raised my eyes.

Daniel saw my face.

“What?”

I showed him the document.

His expression emptied.

Porter.

Elaine was fifty-eight.

Too old.

But she had a younger brother.

I remembered her mentioning him once.

A brother named Michael.

Forty-eight years old.

The exact age.

The phone was still in my hand.

Elaine spoke.

“Margaret?”

I could barely answer.

“Elaine.”

“Yes?”

“Did your parents adopt your brother?”

Silence.

Long enough.

Far too long.

Then
