I will not allow Raymond Bell\u2019s misconduct to become a weapon against him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned away.<\/p>\n<p>Harold must have recognized himself in Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Two fathers given the same terrible information.<\/p>\n<p>Both choosing the child over biology.<\/p>\n<p>The five million dollars had not been hush money.<\/p>\n<p>It was the beginning of a restitution fund.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Mercer contributed voluntarily after learning other families might have been affected.<\/p>\n<p>Redstone grew that money.<\/p>\n<p>Bell later added assets.<\/p>\n<p>Harold managed them.<\/p>\n<p>That was why Redstone existed.<\/p>\n<p>Not as payment.<\/p>\n<p>As a future fund for the families.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold never told me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe probably couldn\u2019t,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The phone buzzed again.<\/p>\n<p>THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE.<\/p>\n<p>Then another photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Renee still bound.<\/p>\n<p>This time Bell was kneeling beside her.<\/p>\n<p>A gun pressed against his neck.<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s hand held it.<\/p>\n<p>Bell was a hostage after all.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cWe have to give him something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine looked at the Mercer file.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the officers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe give him a copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot if Bell\u2019s original records look exactly like copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel spoke for the first time in several minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t need the paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe needs authentication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed to the patient index.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout Bell confirming the coding system, the records can be challenged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he needs Bell alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That gave us leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Not much.<\/p>\n<p>But enough to plan.<\/p>\n<p>Police began preparing a controlled exchange.<\/p>\n<p>We still needed a location.<\/p>\n<p>Victor sent it ten minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>An abandoned Hale-Briggs construction yard outside Tempe.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel knew it.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>Harold had taken me there once when Daniel was small.<\/p>\n<p>Dust.<\/p>\n<p>Steel sheds.<\/p>\n<p>Stacks of lumber.<\/p>\n<p>A place from another life.<\/p>\n<p>Victor wanted the Mercer file at midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine insisted Daniel would not carry the original.<\/p>\n<p>Police prepared a replica package.<\/p>\n<p>Tracking device.<\/p>\n<p>Audio transmitter.<\/p>\n<p>Officers would position nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel insisted on delivering it.<\/p>\n<p>This time, I did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>It was his wife.<\/p>\n<p>His choice.<\/p>\n<p>Before he left, I touched his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you see Renee, do not decide everything tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can save someone without deciding whether you still trust them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>Then he hugged me.<\/p>\n<p>Tightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever think Dad would lie to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Christmas gifts. Medical appointments. Whether he ate pie at midnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the hidden room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut people can love us and still make terrible choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then left with detectives.<\/p>\n<p>I remained at Willow Creek with Elaine and Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>At 11:47 p.m., police audio came through a speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel entered the construction yard.<\/p>\n<p>Wind rattled loose sheet metal.<\/p>\n<p>His footsteps echoed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Victor\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Renee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me the file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Movement.<\/p>\n<p>Renee appeared over the live video feed from Daniel\u2019s hidden camera.<\/p>\n<p>Bound.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Bell sat several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>His hands were tied now.<\/p>\n<p>Blood stained his shirt collar.<\/p>\n<p>Victor stood between them.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel raised the package.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet them go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t how this works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Bell looked directly toward Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t give it to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor struck Bell across the face.<\/p>\n<p>I flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel took one step forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo that again and you get nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Victor said, almost approvingly:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s Harold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My son did not react.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntie Renee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor gestured.<\/p>\n<p>A second man stepped from the shadows.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Pike.<\/p>\n<p>The pharmacy technician.<\/p>\n<p>He cut Renee\u2019s wrist restraints.<\/p>\n<p>She ran toward Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He caught her.<\/p>\n<p>For one second, they held each other.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel moved her behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor pointed at Bell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow the file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel held it up.<\/p>\n<p>Bell shouted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t want Jonathan Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor raised the gun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell shouted louder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mercer file is bait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>Victor pressed the gun into Bell\u2019s cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast warning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell ignored the weapon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him whose name comes after Jonathan\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back at Willow Creek, Rachel grabbed the patient index.<\/p>\n<p>She turned pages.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Then the next line.<\/p>\n<p>Her hands stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I looked over her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>The name meant nothing to me.<\/p>\n<p>But Elaine recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed.<\/p>\n<p>Mother: Evelyn Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine was already searching.<\/p>\n<p>Then she found the obituary.<\/p>\n<p>Laura Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Died at twenty-six.<\/p>\n<p>No children.<\/p>\n<p>Motor vehicle accident.<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>His legal daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Bell\u2019s biological daughter.<\/p>\n<p>The entire story shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Victor had not begun by chasing money.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, he had discovered Bell had done to him exactly what Bell had done to Harold.<\/p>\n<p>At the construction yard, Bell spoke before Victor could stop him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found Laura\u2019s record seventeen years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s face changed on camera.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel went still.<\/p>\n<p>Bell continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou blamed Harold because he knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor struck him again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShut your mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou blamed everyone except me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor raised the gun.<\/p>\n<p>Bell looked straight at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should blame me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The yard became silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then Victor said something that explained seventeen years of rage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter died believing I was her father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s hand trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had no blood in her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat did not make you less her father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s face twisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because the same truth had been tearing through him for days.<\/p>\n<p>Harold was not his biological father.<\/p>\n<p>But Harold was still his father.<\/p>\n<p>Victor had never accepted the distinction.<\/p>\n<p>Or could not.<\/p>\n<p>Bell said, \u201cLaura loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou violated my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made me raise your child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell\u2019s eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI committed an unforgivable act.
