For the next twenty minutes, I watched two things with almost equal attention: the stranded SUV in my passenger-side mirror and the clock glowing on my dashboard. \u201cThe point is you were given an appointment.\u201d<\/p>\n
A horn exploded from the highway as somebody changed lanes too late.<\/p>\n
I watched the trooper step farther from traffic.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe road is dangerous,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is what police are for.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd they\u2019re stretched thin tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood in the rain holding the phone.<\/p>\n

I knew Victor well enough.<\/p>\n
