Go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nico spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m staying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dario stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m staying with Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa looked at her son.<\/p>\n<p>Nico corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m staying here tonight if Uncle Stephen says okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dario\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to decide where my son stays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cBut Nico is sixteen, Melissa is here, and if you want to argue about custody arrangements tonight, you can do it somewhere other than my hallway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dario stared at Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that\u2019s it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor tonight, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He picked up the bag.<\/p>\n<p>At the doorway, Nico said, \u201cMy passport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dario did not turn around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy passport is in that bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dario stepped outside.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus followed him onto the porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d Dario snapped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking sure you leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The front door closed.<\/p>\n<p>We watched through the window as he crossed the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>He reached his car.<\/p>\n<p>Stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Then opened the overnight bag on the hood.<\/p>\n<p>For one hopeful second, I thought he was taking out Nico\u2019s passport.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he removed a thick white envelope.<\/p>\n<p>He stuffed it beneath his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus noticed.<\/p>\n<p>So did Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was that?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Nico\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn your office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere in the office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad took it from behind the filing cabinet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>The cabinet sat against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>There should have been nothing behind it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was in the envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside, Dario climbed into his car.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could call anyone, headlights swept across the living-room wall.<\/p>\n<p>Another car had pulled behind Dario, blocking the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>A woman stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>She was perhaps forty, wearing a long dark coat and carrying a folder beneath one arm.<\/p>\n<p>Dario froze.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa whispered, \u201cThat\u2019s her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman looked toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>Then directly at Dario.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the woman who came here last month asking whether Stephen was home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the day.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa had told me afterward that a salesperson had come to the door.<\/p>\n<p>The woman lifted the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Dario\u2019s shoulders sagged.<\/p>\n<p>Nico moved closer to the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa whispered, \u201cI think she\u2019s the person who gave Dario money before we ever rented the rooms.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=18643\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Woman in the Driveway Brought Proof That Dario Had Been Selling More Than Rooms Long Before Anyone Planned to Move In<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dario did not answer Nico\u2019s question.
