Cold air slipped through whenever the wind came from the north, but every time I planned to replace it something involving Sarah’s family became more urgent. Once it had been Leo’s soccer cleats. Another time it was money toward David’s registration fees. The window always waited.

The new latch cost twenty-eight dollars.

I tightened the final screw with one of Michael’s old screwdrivers and pressed my palm against the frame.

No draft.

The satisfaction I felt was embarrassingly large.

Then I remembered that the soccer cleats I had bought instead of fixing the window cost eighty-six dollars.

I sat at my computer.

I intended to review one year of bank records.

Instead, I went back four.

The recurring transfers were easy to calculate. Forty-eight mortgage payments at twelve hundred dollars each came to fifty-seven thousand six hundred. The SUV added more than twenty-one thousand. Storage added thousands more. Their share of the phone bill had quietly accumulated into another significant amount.

Then I began finding the irregular transfers.

Property taxes.

Summer programs.

Tires.

A water heater.

David’s business expenses.

School costs.

Appliances.

There was a refrigerator Sarah once described as an emergency because theirs had stopped working. Months later, I remembered seeing the supposedly broken refrigerator in a photograph of their garage.

At the time, I had invented a convenient explanation.

They must have repaired it.

I had been protecting Sarah from my suspicion without her ever asking me to.

When the spreadsheet finally stopped growing, the total was $117,430.

I checked it twice.

Then a third time.

The number remained.

Michael and I had paid less for our first house.

Strangely, anger was not my first reaction.

Embarrassment was.

How could an intelligent woman transfer more than a hundred thousand dollars without realizing what she was doing?

Because I had never viewed the requests together.

Each one arrived alone, wrapped in urgency. A thousand dollars here. Four hundred there. Something for Leo. Something for the house. Something to help David finally get his business moving.

Every individual decision had looked like generosity.

Together they looked like dependence.

Before noon, an email from David appeared.

Its formal tone sounded borrowed from a lawyer. He wrote that he and Sarah had made financial commitments based on assurances I had provided. My abrupt withdrawal, he claimed, could cause serious harm. He hoped we could resolve the matter privately before they explored other remedies.

I printed the email.

Then I printed Sarah’s original message telling me not to contact them.

I put both into a folder.

The following morning Sarah arrived alone.

For one hopeful second, seeing her on my porch made me think she had come because she missed me.

She looked exhausted.
