Arthur’s death arrived in April.

Five years.

I did not mark it publicly.

No social media.

No family dinner.

No flowers delivered to Caldwell.

Grief does not improve because a calendar announces it.

Still, I woke knowing.

Before opening my eyes.

The body keeps dates the mind pretends are ordinary.

I made coffee.

Sat at the kitchen table.

Arthur’s notebook remained nearby.

Old laundromat key beside it.

I picked up the key.

Useless.

David’s phrase.

Because it doesn’t open anything anymore.

At nine, I got in the car.

No plan.

That was a lie.

I drove toward the old Caldwell Laundry address.

I had not visited in years.

The neighborhood had changed.

The pharmacy became a fitness studio.

The diner was now a Thai restaurant.

The hardware store survived, apparently through stubbornness.

Our old laundromat building remained.

Different business.

A discount furniture outlet.

The front windows had been replaced.

Sign gone.

Brick painted beige.

I parked across the street.

For a while, I did not get out.

The old layout still existed in my head.

Twelve washers.

Eight dryers.

Small office.

Bad fluorescent light.

Coloring table later.

Washer Seven.

Drain backup.

Arthur ankle-deep in gray water laughing at two in the morning.

The building before Caldwell became Caldwell.

I crossed the street.

The front door opened automatically.

Our door had stuck in winter.

Progress.

A young man behind a counter said, “Can I help you?”

“No.”

I looked around.

Furniture everywhere.

Sofas where washers had stood.

Dining sets where folding tables belonged.

Our office wall had been removed.

The floor was different.

Nothing remained.

Good.

Painful.

Good.

I walked toward the back.

The employee called, “Ma’am?”

“I’m fine.”

Apparently I looked like a confused trespasser.

Fair.

“This used to be a laundromat.”

“Oh.”

“I owned it.”

“Oh.”

He did not care.

Perfect.

“When?”

“Long before sectional sofa occupied the spot.

$899.

Arthur would complain about the price.

I smiled.

Then my phone rang.

David.

I ignored it.

He called again.

I answered.

“Yes?”

“Where are you?”

“Why?”

“I went to your house.”

That was unusual.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why are you at my house?”

He paused.

“I knew what day it was.”

Of course.

“I’m fine.”

“Where are you?”

I looked at the sectional.

“The laundromat.”

Silence.

“The old one?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Another lie.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“Mom.”

“I’m leaving.”

“Stay.”

He hung up.

Disobedient.

Inherited.

I waited outside because standing among discounted sofas while grieving felt unnecessarily strange.

David arrived twenty minutes later.

He parked badly.

Arthur would have commented.

He crossed the street carrying two coffees.

“Bribery?”

“Yes.”

I took one.

We sat on a low brick wall beside the building.

Traffic moved past.

Nobody knew what the place had been.

That felt important.

“You never brought mean.”

Yes.

After we sold the building, I avoided it.

Arthur visited once.

He came home and said the new owner had removed our old counter.

I had refused to go.

“Why didn’t you?”

I looked at the key in my hand.

“I thought it would make me sad.”

“And?”

“It does.”

He waited.

“But that’s not why.”

“What then?”

I watched cars pass.

“I think I was afraid it would look small.”

David frowned.

“The building?”

“Yes.”

It did.

Much smaller than memory.

“How is that bad?”

“Because so much started here.”

He understood slowly.

“If it looks ordinary…”

“Then maybe what we did becomes ordinary too.”

David stared at the beige building.

“Mom.”

“I know.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

I laughed.

He drank coffee.

Then said, “Dad brought me once.”

I Maybe twenty-nine.”

“Why?”

“We were driving nearby.”

“What did he say?”

“Not much.”

Of course.

“He pointed out where the machines were.”

“Did he go inside?”

“No.”

“What else?”

David smiled.

“He said you nearly killed him over a wrench.”

“That is false.”

“I assumed.”

“It was three dollars.”

“He said five.”

“Inflation.”

We laughed.

Then David became quiet.

“He told me this place was the last time the company belonged only to you two.”

I looked at him.

“What did he mean?”

“I asked.”

“And?”

“He said once employees came, Caldwell belonged partly to people whose rent depended on your decisions.”

Arthur.

Always clearer after the fact.

“That scared him.”

“Did he say?”

“Yes.”

“What exactly?”

David thought.

“He said owning machines was easy. Being responsible for people changed the weight.”

I looked toward the building.

Yes.

I remembered first payroll.

Writing checks.

Counting twice.

The fear that someone else’s groceries now depended on whether Arthur and I had priced contracts correctly.

Responsibility.

Not ownership.

Related.

Different.

“He should have told me that.”

“Maybe he did.”

I looked sharply.

David smiled.

“You two were bad listeners.”

“Your father was.”

“Sure.”

We sat.

After a while, I gave David the old key.

He looked at it.

“What?”

“Hold it.”

“Why?”

“I want to see something.”

He took it.

The key looked small in his hand.

Just metal.

No glow.

No inheritance visible.

“Do you want it?”

I asked.

He looked alarmed.

“Are you dying?”

“No.”

“Then why are you giving me symbolic objects at the site of the original business on Dad’s death that?”

“Because I’ve already seen everything you were good at.”

My throat tightened.

He looked embarrassed.

“I’d want the thing you
