carried more than policy.

I looked around my kitchen.

Sketchbook.

Arthur’s notebook.

Fabric samples from Lily.

My mother’s old recipe box.

A life once treated as background.

“No.”

Rosa became quiet.

“Not like before.”

“No.”

“Huh.”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Rosa.”

“It’s weird.”

“For me too.”

“We used to just come find you.”

“I know.”

“Sometimes that was easier.”

“Yes.”

“Sometimes bad.”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

“At least you admit it.”

“Frequently.”

The policy review happened.

Hourly representatives identified the problem quickly.

Attendance warnings included patterns strongly correlated with transportation instability and caregiving.

People already carrying more pressure were receiving more mandatory weekends.

The rule did not deliberately discriminate.

It still distributed burden unevenly.

Operations revised it.

Weekend rotation became separate from attendance discipline except for actual no-show patterns directly tied to scheduled overtime.

Exemption process simplified.

Predictability increased through schedules posted farther in advance.

Not perfect.

Better.

David sent me the final policy.

No request for approval.

Good.

I called Rosa.

“They changed it.”

“I know.”

“Happy?”

“No.”

“What now?”

“Parking still terrible.”

I laughed.

“Goodbye, Rosa.”

She hung up first.

That Thursday, Camille asked us to draw a garment from memory.

No reference.

I drew a white apron.

Not Brenda’s.

Not Rosa’s.

Not Caldwell’s.

Generic.

Rectangle.

Ties.

Pockets.

Simple object.

Camille stopped beside me.

“You’re overworking it.”

“I know.”

“What is it?”

“An apron.”

“Why?”

I looked at the page.

Because an apron had once meant status.

Then labor.

Then choice.

Then service.

Then nothing more than cloth.

“Because I know it.”

Camille nodded.

“Then stop explaining it to the paper.”

I put down the pencil.

She was right.

Again.

Infuriating.

The apron did not need every meaning drawn into it.

Some history could remain mine.

Some work could simply be work.

That might be what stepping back finally required too.

Caring without controlling.

Knowing without deciding.

Being present without becoming the final door.

Harder than authority.

Possibly more honest.

Click here to continue reading: PART 38: Lily’s Coat Turned Into a Family Argument About Inheritance, and I
