more.”

Outside.

My mother near Tommy’s car.

Mrs. Delaney beside her.

Ellen had photographed them from near the school doors.

My mother’s face was turned toward the road.

Searching.

The same image from another angle.

Different witness.

Same truth.

You were alone, but people were looking.

I sat there for a long time.

Then I asked, “Can I keep them?”

Claire smiled.

“They were always yours.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“They were Ellen’s.”

“That’s not what she thought.”

She pointed to the box.

Later.

I ran my finger over the word.

For years, I believed memory was something that happened to us.

Maybe memory was also an archive.

People kept pieces we were not ready to hold.

My mother kept the dress.

Ellen kept photographs.

Tommy kept guilt.

Brenda kept a correction from Mrs. Delaney.

I kept the humiliation.

Each of us preserved a different fragment.

No one had the whole night.

Not even me.

I closed the box.

On the drive home, I did not feel healed.

I distrusted that word when applied too quickly.

I felt expanded.

That was different.

The story had not become kinder.

Brenda still mocked me.

Tommy still laughed.

I still walked home crying.

But those facts no longer occupied every inch of the evening.

There had been before.

There had been after.

There had been people looking for me.

There had been people who failed me and tried again.

There had been a cousin preserving joy against my instructions.

At home, I placed the gray box beside the cedar chest.

Two containers.

Two women.

My mother.

Ellen.

Both had apparently decided I was not qualified at seventeen to determine the permanent meaning of objects.

They were right.

I hated that.

Then I laughed.

My phone buzzed.

A message from David.

How’s the mystery?

I took a photograph of the box.

Sent it.

He called immediately.

“What is that?”

“Twenty-three photographs.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“Of prom?”

“Yes.”

“Good?”

“Some.”

“Bad?”

“Some.”

“Worth seeing?”

I looked at the top photograph.

Me laughing.

“Yes.”

He became quiet.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

This time no hesitation.

“Actually yes.”

After we hung up, I removed the first photograph.

Myself before Brenda.

I placed it on the kitchen table.

Not framed.

Not hidden.

Just visible.

Later had finally arrived.

Click here to continue reading: PART
