I kept giving it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Music changed.<\/p>\n<p>An old slow song.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy stood across the room speaking to Leonard.<\/p>\n<p>The exact opening chords tugged at some distant memory.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda heard it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glanced toward the dance floor.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda looked toward Tommy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That made her laugh.<\/p>\n<p>A real laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the first I had ever heard from her that did not require somebody else to lose.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cWith whoever asks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As if summoned by the sentence, Leonard appeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He bowed badly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you like to embarrass ourselves?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublicly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreferably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brenda.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So I did.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard and I walked onto the dance floor.<\/p>\n<p>He put one hand lightly at my back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should warn you,\u201d he said, \u201cI have replaced one knee and no longer trust the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have two original knees and trust neither.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcellent. We\u2019re evenly matched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We began moving.<\/p>\n<p>Badly.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Around us, other classmates joined.<\/p>\n<p>Susan.<\/p>\n<p>Frank.<\/p>\n<p>Carol.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy stood near the edge, smiling.<\/p>\n<p>Then he approached.<\/p>\n<p>When the song ended, Leonard handed me off theatrically.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy held out his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-five years ago, I had needed him to do one small brave thing.<\/p>\n<p>He had failed.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight he had done several.<\/p>\n<p>I placed my hand in his.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We danced.<\/p>\n<p>Not romantically.<\/p>\n<p>Not nostalgically.<\/p>\n<p>Simply two people acknowledging an old unfinished moment without pretending it could be restored.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway through the song, Tommy said, \u201cYou know, the dress really was beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is an extremely delayed compliment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor fifty-five years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScheduling problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Near the wall, Brenda watched.<\/p>\n<p>Not smiling.<\/p>\n<p>Not frowning.<\/p>\n<p>Just watching.<\/p>\n<p>Then a Fairmont employee crossed behind her carrying a stack of folded white banquet cloths.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>She held the door open for him.<\/p>\n<p>It was almost nothing.<\/p>\n<p>But I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time all evening, I stopped wondering whether Brenda Vance had changed.<\/p>\n<p>The more important question had finally become obvious.<\/p>\n<p>I had.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=18446\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Morning After the Reunion, a Photograph Reached My Office and Forced Me to Reconsider What I Thought I Had Reclaimed<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The apron was heavier than I expected.
