I don\u2019t think she remembers how much it cost you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded right.<\/p>\n<p>Cruelty often occupied more memory in the person receiving it than the person delivering it.<\/p>\n<p>That fact had once enraged me.<\/p>\n<p>Now it mostly seemed inefficient.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy said, \u201cYou know what I remember most?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou taking off your coat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t have my coat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the dance. Earlier. You were wearing your mother\u2019s sweater when you arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left my coat there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did. But when you came into the gym, you had a cardigan over the dress. One dishwasher left after an injury. We have another event upstairs running late, and half the relief staff are there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does this room need?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoffee refresh, dessert clearing, breakdown later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re short.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll manage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. We\u2019re short.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced through the service door.<\/p>\n<p>Trays had begun accumulating.<\/p>\n<p>Not disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Pressure.<\/p>\n<p>There is a stage in every operation before failure when everything still looks acceptable to outsiders.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, everyone is running ten percent faster than they should.<\/p>\n<p>That stage rarely lasts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall your relief list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgency?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty-five minutes minimum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about banquet staff from the wedding upstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can\u2019t leave yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe narrowed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat face?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same one David has when he decides a problem is his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can clear tables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have two working hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are a guest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been both before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A young server rushed past carrying a tub of glassware.<\/p>\n<p>His sleeve caught the edge of a metal shelf.<\/p>\n<p>The tub tilted.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed one side before it fell.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t apologize.
