began shaking.<\/p>\n<p>Dad swore.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had not disappeared from the operation.<\/p>\n<p>He had been planning contingencies against Ethan months before anyone knew the current crisis would erupt.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>Another note.<\/p>\n<p>G increasingly unstable. D compromised. Prepare independent containment.<\/p>\n<p>Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was planning around both of them.<\/p>\n<p>Not following Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Managing him.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been looking at the wrong top of the chain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer did not answer yet.<\/p>\n<p>She opened Thomas\u2019s own ledger.<\/p>\n<p>The first page contained dates beginning thirty years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Long before Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Long before Mom died.<\/p>\n<p>Long before David Pike\u2019s fire.<\/p>\n<p>And written across the top in Thomas\u2019s careful handwriting were five words.<\/p>\n<p>Harold finds them.
