been taking cash from prepaid funeral accounts to cover gambling debts.

David threatened to expose him.

They argued at David’s house.

Harold struck him.

David she report him?”

The answer was in the next paragraph.

Harold threatened to implicate Dad.

Dad had done occasional construction work for the funeral home.

Invoices had been paid irregularly.

Harold said he could create records showing Dad helped steal from the prepaid accounts.

Mom believed the threat.

Worse, that hurt.

Because at that time, she may have been right.

Dad and Harold had been nearly inseparable.

Dad believed loyalty meant standing beside someone until there was nothing left to stand beside.

Mom had understood how dangerous that could become.

So she hid the truth.

The letter continued.

Over time, Harold’s fear became opportunity.

He discovered how easily deaths could erase financial problems.

How vulnerable families were in the days after losing someone.

How little scrutiny followed elderly or medically fragile people into funeral homes.

He began using information from clients.

Debts.

Properties.

Estranged heirs.

Insurance.

At first, according to Mom, he exploited deaths that happened naturally.

Then he began influencing outcomes.

Dad closed his eyes.

“She knew before years.

Payments.

Properties.

Insurance accounts.

The same color codes later used in Grant’s red notebook appeared in simpler form.

Harold invented the system.

Grant refined it.

The revolver was registered to David Pike.

It had never been reported missing.

The cloth around it contained dark stains.

Old.

Possibly blood.

Mercer ordered full forensic testing.

The photographs were worse.

Several showed David’s house before the fire.

Others showed papers spread across a kitchen table.

Bank statements.

Funeral-home accounts.

Evidence David had gathered against Harold.

One photograph showed Harold himself.

Taken from outside a window.

Dad frowned.

“Who took these?”

Mom’s letter answered.

Peter Mallory.

Even then, Mallory had been involved.

Not as Grant’s corrupt attorney.

As David Pike’s lawyer.

David had asked him for help before confronting Harold.

After David died, Mallory kept copies.

Harold believed everything was destroyed.

Mallory let him believe that.

Years later, when Grant entered the scheme, Mallory recognized the pattern.

He carried his own guilt because by then he had accepted money to stay quiet.

Dad stared at the photographs.

“So everybody had something on everybody.”

Mercer nodded.

“That may be how the network survived.”

Fear did not flow in one direction.

It circulated.

Harold feared Mallory.

Mallory feared Harold.

Grant feared Mom.

Vanessa feared Grant.

Marcus feared Grant.

Russell feared everyone.

Nobody could leave without risking what the others knew.

That was the architecture.

The cassette tape was labeled DAVID – 2 DAYS BEFORE.

The bank had equipment old enough to play it.

We listened in a private room.

David Pike’s voice was unfamiliar.

Calm.

Methodical.

He described missing funeral accounts.

Harold’s gambling
