Especially after Eleanor died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know about Vanessa\u2019s old power of attorney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe witnessed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff retrieved the suspected forged document.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a notarization.<\/p>\n<p>Harold Pike.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at the signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe helped them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s expression suggested something worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made the fraud possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The note from Mom\u2019s music box contained only three useful pieces of information.<\/p>\n<p>First County Bank.<\/p>\n<p>317.<\/p>\n<p>My full legal name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA deposit box,\u201d Dad said.<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff Mercer agreed.<\/p>\n<p>The brass key appeared consistent with one.<\/p>\n<p>The bank was closed.<\/p>\n<p>An officer was stationed there overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Harold requested an attorney and refused to speak.<\/p>\n<p>Grant denied sending him.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa blamed Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators searched Grant\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>They found repeated calls to Harold.<\/p>\n<p>They also found money transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Five thousand dollars shortly before the forged power of attorney was submitted.<\/p>\n<p>And another transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Ten thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Three years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The morning after Mom died.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at the date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he buy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff Mercer looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we need to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following morning we met her at First County Bank.<\/p>\n<p>A manager escorted us downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The safe-deposit room smelled faintly of metal, paper, and old carpet.<\/p>\n<p>Box 317 was registered to Eleanor Cole and Natalie Cole.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had added me six months before her death.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had told me.<\/p>\n<p>The manager inserted the bank key.<\/p>\n<p>I used the brass one.<\/p>\n<p>The lock opened.<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff Mercer placed the long metal container on a private table.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the lid.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had prepared for someone not to believe her.<\/p>\n<p>There were copies of the investigator\u2019s report.<\/p>\n<p>Bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Records of the stolen money.<\/p>\n<p>There were pictures of Harold meeting Vanessa and Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad found a receipt.<\/p>\n<p>Harold\u2019s funeral home.<\/p>\n<p>Ten thousand dollars in cash.<\/p>\n<p>Dated the morning after Mom died.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten notation appeared beside the payment.<\/p>\n<p>Immediate cremation.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat down heavily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me not to request an autopsy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff Mercer studied the receipt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Eleanor had a diagnosed heart condition.
