He documented that I understand my property, my finances, and every legal decision I made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded oddly specific.<\/p>\n<p>Grant seemed to think so too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you need that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause my lawyer expected you to ask exactly that question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa returned to the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho controls the trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s gaze stayed on me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I\u2019m alive, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd afterward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfterward is none of your business while I\u2019m still sitting here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I become unable to manage my affairs, my successor trustee steps in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I had signed papers the previous afternoon, but Dad and the lawyer had moved so carefully through a stack of documents that I had understood only part of what was being changed.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa understood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave Natalie the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI protected my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom your own family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom anyone who thinks my obituary is more useful than my company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant began arguing in the background.<\/p>\n<p>Dad moved the phone away from his ear.<\/p>\n<p>When the noise stopped, he brought it back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you finished?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t cut us out because Natalie showed up for two days,\u201d Vanessa said.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at the tabletop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His thumb moved slowly along the handle of my mug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie called me every Sunday for nine years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa tried to interrupt.<\/p>\n<p>Dad didn\u2019t let her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my pension payment was delayed, she covered my property taxes without telling anyone. When the furnace failed, she paid the repairman after Grant promised for three weeks that he was coming over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant said, \u201cThat isn\u2019t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice rose for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when I had kidney surgery, she took three weeks away from her job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou two came once,\u201d Dad continued. \u201cTwenty minutes. You spent half of it complaining about parking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa whispered, \u201cWe have lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo does she.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Dad wasn\u2019t a sentimental man.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing him keep an inventory of things I had never considered sacrifices made me uncomfortable in a way praise usually did.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa finally said, \u201cWe stayed near you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou became remarkably attentive when the county reassessed my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That landed.<\/p>\n<p>The house had been bought decades ago for a fraction of its current value. New development had swallowed the surrounding farmland, turning Dad\u2019s ordinary piece of property into something developers wanted badly.<\/p>\n<p>Grant had begun discussing renovations soon afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa had started asking whether Dad really needed so much space.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I had treated those comments as annoying rather than dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not doing this,\u201d Vanessa said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that supposed to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s eyes moved toward the laptop on my counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI installed cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reaction was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>Grant cursed.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa asked where.<\/p>\n<p>Dad almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou recorded us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI protected my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell the sheriff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word sheriff produced another small silence.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He hadn\u2019t mentioned law enforcement to me.<\/p>\n<p>Dad noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater,\u201d he mouthed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Vanessa changed tactics.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, listen. We were scared. Somebody told us you were dead. We went over there because we didn\u2019t know what else to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why were you asking a funeral home about death certificates before confirming there was a body?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you in my office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time Vanessa\u2019s silence felt different.<\/p>\n<p>Dad reached for the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Four camera feeds filled the screen.<\/p>\n<p>The porch.<\/p>\n<p>Living room.<\/p>\n<p>Kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Office.<\/p>\n<p>My sister and Grant were standing inside the office eleven hours away.<\/p>\n<p>Every drawer in Dad\u2019s desk was open.<\/p>\n<p>Papers lay across the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Grant had removed files from a cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stood near the bookcase.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been watching them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince they entered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I wanted them to believe they had time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence frightened me more than anything Vanessa had said.<\/p>\n<p>Dad ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Almost immediately, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>He motioned for me not to answer.<\/p>\n<p>I let it go to voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>Her recorded voice came through a moment later, apologetic and controlled, saying there had been confusion and asking us to call so the family could discuss things sensibly.<\/p>\n<p>On Dad\u2019s laptop, however, the live microphone told a different story.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa lowered her phone and swore.<\/p>\n<p>Grant asked whether I had answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn\u2019t know everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>Then Grant crossed the office.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped in front of the framed photograph of Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor Cole had been dead three years.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph had been taken at a summer picnic. She was squinting against sunlight, one hand lifted as if she had been caught halfway through telling whoever held the camera to stop.<\/p>\n<p>Grant removed the frame.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a wall safe.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Grant know the combination?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe shouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant entered four digits.<\/p>\n<p>The lock released.<\/p>\n<p>Dad went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant opened the safe and began removing envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa joined him.<\/p>\n<p>They found a brown packet.<\/p>\n<p>Grant smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned closer to the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa tore open the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>They read together.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression brightened.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed to something on the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house. Truck. Accounts. Everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that\u2019s the original, we can fight the trust. We say Natalie pressured him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t my will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn old draft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On-screen, Vanessa reached the final page.<\/p>\n<p>Her smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant snatched the document.<\/p>\n<p>He checked it himself.<\/p>\n<p>Then he began emptying the safe.<\/p>\n<p>Old insurance papers came out.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s jewelry box.<\/p>\n<p>A few property records.<\/p>\n<p>Then a small red folder.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood so abruptly his chair toppled backward.<\/p>\n<p>I jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked over her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever was on the first page drained the anger from both of them.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa turned toward the camera.<\/p>\n<p>Not accidentally.<\/p>\n<p>Directly toward it.<\/p>\n<p>For one disturbing second, it felt as though she were looking into our kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>Grant took the page.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved down it.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at Vanessa with naked fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said this was destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Frank sees it\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad reached for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>I caught his wrist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are they talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant folded the document and shoved it inside his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa hurriedly returned everything else to the safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do we do?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Grant replaced Mom\u2019s photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said the words that changed the shape of the entire morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe burn it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to destroy it before Natalie finds out what really happened the night Eleanor died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Three years earlier, my mother had supposedly suffered a heart attack alone at home.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa had found her.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa had called the ambulance.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa had explained why Dad wasn\u2019t there.<\/p>\n<p>I had believed every word.<\/p>\n<p>Dad reached toward the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Before his fingers touched it, all four camera feeds went black.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=18278\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Folder My Sister Tried to Steal Contained My Mother\u2019s Warning, and Her Recorded Voice Changed the Night She Died<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For several seconds after Dad spoke, the only sound in my kitchen was the refrigerator humming.
