The room was still dark, the curtains holding back the first gray light, and for a second I couldn\u2019t understand why I smelled bacon.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Dad was downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My sister Vanessa\u2019s voice was thin and unsteady.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed myself upright. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause long enough for dread to settle into my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad died last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Not figuratively. My lungs simply seemed to forget what they were supposed to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2019s dead,\u201d Vanessa repeated. This time she sounded almost impatient, as though saying it twice made the fact more official. \u201cGrant found out early this morning. I\u2019ve been trying to figure out how to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My bare feet hit the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Through the bedroom door, I could hear the faint scrape of a chair downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Then the clink of silverware against a plate.<\/p>\n<p>I stared toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa,\u201d I said slowly, \u201cwhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Dad\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer bothered me even more.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s house was eleven hours away.<\/p>\n<p>My sister had no idea he had left it two nights earlier.<\/p>\n<p>She had no idea he had called me and said six words I had never heard from him before.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie, I need you to come.<\/p>\n<p>Then, after a pause:<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t tell Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>I had driven through the night.<\/p>\n<p>When I reached his house shortly before dawn, Dad had been waiting in the dark living room wearing his brown coat, with one suitcase beside his chair and a locked metal box resting between his shoes.<\/p>\n<p>He hadn\u2019t explained much.<\/p>\n<p>He had simply climbed into my car and asked me to drive.<\/p>\n<p>Now, forty-eight hours later, Vanessa was telling me he had died.<\/p>\n<p>I walked downstairs with the phone pressed against my ear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the stairs, I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>My father sat at my kitchen table three feet away.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Cole was seventy-six years old, broad-shouldered despite the weight he had lost since Mom\u2019s death, with white hair that refused to lie flat at the back of his head. He was wearing yesterday\u2019s flannel shirt and reading glasses.<\/p>\n<p>In one hand, he held my coffee mug.<\/p>\n<p>With the other, he was stealing bacon from my plate.<\/p>\n<p>He looked very much alive.<\/p>\n<p>Dad glanced up.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>He raised one eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold told you Dad died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad slowly put down the strip of bacon.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa, I need you to tell me exactly what Harold said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I\u2019m trying to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound strange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just woke up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always sound strange when something isn\u2019t about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The familiar edge.<\/p>\n<p>Even while announcing our father\u2019s death, Vanessa could still find room for an old grievance.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out the chair opposite Dad and sat.<\/p>\n<p>He mouthed, Speaker.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to him?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know exactly. Probably his heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant thinks he died sometime during the night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes moved to Dad.<\/p>\n<p>He leaned back, listening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Grant saw him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you interrogating me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked whether Grant saw Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe went over there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad held out his hand.<\/p>\n<p>I gave him the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie,\u201d Vanessa snapped, \u201cthis is hardly the time to\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMorning, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice had always been distinctive: low, roughened by years of construction work and bad winter colds, impossible to mistake for anyone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa apparently tried anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at the bacon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour dead father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came from the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Dad took another bite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A small sound escaped her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless somebody replaced me overnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the wrong question.<\/p>\n<p>I saw Dad recognize that immediately.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa hadn\u2019t asked whether he was all right.<\/p>\n<p>She hadn\u2019t cried with relief.<\/p>\n<p>She hadn\u2019t said there must have been some horrible mistake.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted to know why he was with me.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what you want to ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Dad interrupted. \u201cHarold didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa went quiet again.<\/p>\n<p>Dad set my mug on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke to Harold at five this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My sister made a sound that could have been a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew exactly where I was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at the clock above my refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he knew I was alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold despite the warmth from the stove.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>He lifted one finger.<\/p>\n<p>Wait.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa recovered quickly. She always had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, then obviously somebody misunderstood something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called Natalie and told her I died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause that\u2019s what I was told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy Harold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did Harold call me before he supposedly called you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter question. Why did you contact his old funeral home this morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked sharply at him.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa\u2019s breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe receptionist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice remained almost gentle.<\/p>\n<p>That was when he was most dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave her my full legal name. My birth date. My Social Security number. You said I died at home, and you wanted to know how quickly the family could obtain certified copies of my death certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>This was new to me.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa said something too softly to hear.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said Grant made the call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man\u2019s voice erupted in the background.<\/p>\n<p>Grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t put this on me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad closed his eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa snapped at her husband to be quiet.<\/p>\n<p>That was another detail I couldn\u2019t make sense of.<\/p>\n<p>If they believed Dad had died, why were they already together at his house before sunrise?<\/p>\n<p>And why did they need death certificates before they had a body?<\/p>\n<p>I folded my arms on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Dad must have seen the question on my face because he nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>He had wondered the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut Grant on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m curious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant came onto the line anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank, this is getting blown completely out of proportion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face became still.<\/p>\n<p>Grant had called him Frank for years, claiming they were too old for formal family titles.<\/p>\n<p>That morning, it sounded different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly is being blown out of proportion?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA misunderstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout whether I\u2019m dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant exhaled loudly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody wanted you dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s gaze shifted toward the locked metal box near my kitchen wall.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had mentioned wanting him dead.<\/p>\n<p>Not until Grant did.<\/p>\n<p>I saw Dad notice that too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting choice of words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, come on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were you doing at my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came over because we thought something had happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt six in the morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s spare key had disappeared three months after Mom died.<\/p>\n<p>He had blamed himself.<\/p>\n<p>Now I wondered.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa took the phone again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, please.
