pears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen your grief is poorly targeted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We stood beneath the overhang.<\/p>\n<p>Finally I asked:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you thinking of buying it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked through the glass doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time the answer was slower.<\/p>\n<p>Certain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you need to come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to know whether I wanted it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sounded surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought recovering the money might make me want to undo everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuy the house. Watching your entire committee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized I had been judging twenty-eight-year-old me using everything forty-year-old me learned afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same trial I had conducted against myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you stop?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeach me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo refunds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then she became serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one thing I never told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Old reflex.<\/p>\n<p>She noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone says that right before evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter my second call to Margaret, she asked me whether she should tell you everything immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me enough that I put down my cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told Mom not to tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Jason?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. And Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained.<\/p>\n<p>At that point she did not know how much access they had to my communications.<\/p>\n<p>She knew her own documents had disappeared years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>She suspected surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>She feared that if Mom confronted me openly and I confronted Jason, he would erase evidence or accelerate whatever plan existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you told her to keep me in the dark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a few days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt became longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat back.<\/p>\n<p>This did not rewrite the story.<\/p>\n<p>But it complicated Mom\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy tell me now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you deserve to know I helped make that choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca did not defend herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I was protecting you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was the dangerous sentence.<\/p>\n<p>So many people had said versions of it.<\/p>\n<p>Jason.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Now Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Protection can become permission if nobody checks where the boundary is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you do it the same way now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Immediate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell you I had information that could affect your marriage. Ask to meet somewhere safe. Give you the documents.
