That was what keys were for.<\/p>\n<p>But Eleanor slipped it back into her gold handbag the moment she realized I was looking.<\/p>\n<p>Then she smiled at me.<\/p>\n<p>Not guiltily.<\/p>\n<p>Possessively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie, my best friend, touched my elbow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re crushing your champagne glass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I loosened my grip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the ballroom, Jason was laughing with two college friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie followed my gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWedding panic?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She studied me but didn\u2019t push.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner began.<\/p>\n<p>Speeches followed.<\/p>\n<p>My father spoke briefly because public sentiment made him uncomfortable. He welcomed Jason to the family, told me he was proud of me, then escaped the microphone before anyone could accuse him of becoming emotional.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s speech was even shorter.<\/p>\n<p>She wished us honesty.<\/p>\n<p>Only that.<\/p>\n<p>Honesty.<\/p>\n<p>Jason smiled when she said it.<\/p>\n<p>I watched my mother return to her chair without smiling back.<\/p>\n<p>Then Eleanor stood.<\/p>\n<p>She had not been scheduled to speak yet.<\/p>\n<p>That didn\u2019t stop her.<\/p>\n<p>She took the microphone from the emcee with the confidence of someone accustomed to turning invitations into ownership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy turn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few guests laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Jason murmured, \u201cHere we go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnow what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat she was speaking now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As though that explained everything.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor began sweetly.<\/p>\n<p>She talked about Jason as a child, about raising him through difficult years, about how proud she was that he had found a woman who could give him the life he deserved.<\/p>\n<p>The wording bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>Give him.<\/p>\n<p>Not build with him.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now I have a daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Applause.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled because two hundred people were watching.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor dabbed theatrically beneath one eye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m especially excited for the newlyweds to begin their life together in that magnificent Upper East Side apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More applause.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I told them already, when they return from Italy, they\u2019ll hardly get rid of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Jason stared at his wine.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor laughed too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, I\u2019ve decided that wonderful place will make the perfect retirement home for me someday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The laughter changed.<\/p>\n<p>It became scattered.<\/p>\n<p>Uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>She raised her glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son knows his mother deserves somewhere comfortable after everything I sacrificed for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason still didn\u2019t look at me.<\/p>\n<p>That was the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Not the toast.<\/p>\n<p>Not the apartment.<\/p>\n<p>His refusal to look at me.<\/p>\n<p>He knew.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor continued, encouraged by her own momentum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s certainly enough room, and family property should remain with family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother stood.<\/p>\n<p>She walked toward Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>People assumed she was joining the toast.<\/p>\n<p>Instead Mom gently took the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may be difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s voice carried through every speaker in the ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe apartment is not Sophia\u2019s anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence came so suddenly I heard silverware strike a plate three tables away.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor\u2019s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Jason looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Finally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does she mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Alarm.<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me become very still.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret, what are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom handed the microphone back to the emcee but didn\u2019t leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe property was transferred before the wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransferred to who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t ask whether I was okay.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t ask why.<\/p>\n<p>He asked to whom.<\/p>\n<p>Mom answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo a protected family structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason\u2019s chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor stepped down from the small stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot simply transfer marital property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad appeared beside Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t marital property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man in the gray suit had stopped eating.<\/p>\n<p>He was staring at Jason.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed because everyone else was staring at us.<\/p>\n<p>Jason came toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia, why didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The question I had been dreading.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would I need to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor about ninety minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nervous ripple moved through nearby tables.<\/p>\n<p>Jason lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t make a scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother just announced to two hundred people that she intends to live in my apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was joking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not joking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>For a fraction of a second, pure frustration crossed his face.<\/p>\n<p>Not at her entitlement.<\/p>\n<p>At her timing.<\/p>\n<p>Mom saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo there was a plan,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a family understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJason and me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every eye turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He looked trapped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t an understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mother stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One word.<\/p>\n<p>A warning.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason reached for my hand.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia, this is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you promise her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor spoke over him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said after the wedding we would work out the transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason\u2019s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s expression did not change at all.<\/p>\n<p>She had been waiting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what transfer?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor realized too late that she had gone further than Jason wanted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, not transfer exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat arrangement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked around at the guests.<\/p>\n<p>Her confidence began crumbling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is hardly appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou introduced the subject.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason moved between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice came from behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove away from my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Roberts, stay out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI paid for the room you\u2019re standing in. I\u2019ll choose where I stand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is between my wife and me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain to your wife why your mother believed she was acquiring rights to her apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I saw the familiar version of him return.<\/p>\n<p>Soft eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Measured voice.<\/p>\n<p>The man who knew exactly how to calm me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBaby, this got misunderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated the word baby suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom worries about her future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you offered mine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Sophia wouldn\u2019t object.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason spun toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ballroom changed.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone heard the command.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>I looked from mother to son.<\/p>\n<p>Something existed between them that I had never been allowed to see.<\/p>\n<p>A partnership beneath the family affection.<\/p>\n<p>The man in the gray suit approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot now, Arthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur didn\u2019t leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that property isn\u2019t available, we need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAvailable for what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>Jason went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur, shut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I think Arthur should continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI apologize. I genuinely thought you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnew what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Jason had represented the apartment as security for an investment arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My ears began ringing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot formal collateral,\u201d Arthur said quickly. \u201cNothing recorded. He called it a moral guarantee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad gave a humorless laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA moral guarantee involving property he doesn\u2019t own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur nodded reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>Jason stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never signed anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me,\u201d Arthur said, \u201cthat after the wedding you would have access to the property and could either leverage it or sell if necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Jason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve and a half million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone gasped.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe several people.<\/p>\n<p>I barely heard them.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve and a half million.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my husband.<\/p>\n<p>The man I had married that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou owe twelve and a half million dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that yes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s business exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the honeymoon reservations that didn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p>The access questions.<\/p>\n<p>The photocopy of my identification.<\/p>\n<p>Claire warning me about keys.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor\u2019s gold handbag.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one in your bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason stepped between us again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked past him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She clutched her handbag.<\/p>\n<p>Mom saw it.<\/p>\n<p>So did Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Then Claire appeared beside us.<\/p>\n<p>She was shaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason turned sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, go sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes were fixed on me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor snapped, \u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at her mother and, perhaps for the first time in her life, didn\u2019t obey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat key isn\u2019t for her house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt one breath of relief.<\/p>\n<p>Then Claire continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s for yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=17979\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Duplicate Key Was Only the Beginning, Because Someone Was Already Inside My Building While We Argued at the Wedding<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I told myself the key could belong to anything.
