Richard.

Possibility.

Not proof.

Still, every new fact seemed to widen the story instead of explaining it.

Marcus had found something else.

The trust in my name had received money originating from holdings historically controlled by Richard.

The original account had existed for more than a decade.

For years, it had barely moved.

Then activity resumed.

“When?” I asked.

“Approximately six months before you discovered Julian’s affair.”

I looked at Eleanor.

That placed the beginning earlier again.

“What does that tell us?”

Marcus answered cautiously.

“Someone activated an old financial structure me.

The theft endangered me.

But the forged version of my life was something else.

Julian had studied me closely enough to manufacture a criminal imitation.

My handwriting.

My voice.

My finances.

My emotions.

Even my marriage.

“He planned to leave me behind as the criminal,” I said.

Eleanor sat opposite me.

“Yes.”

There was no point softening it anymore.

I looked at the photograph from the airport.

“I loved him.”

“I difference.”

Her practicality steadied me.

I wiped my face before tears could fall far enough to blur my vision.

There would be time for grief.

Right now, grief was another thing Julian expected me to do instead of think.

Marcus continued tracing the transactions.

Several paths still touched Liam Vance.

Chloe’s role remained unclear.

Some payments connected indirectly to accounts or expenses benefiting her, but there was not yet enough evidence to establish whether she understood where the money originated.

That mattered.

I had been thinking of Chloe as Julian’s partner in everything.

Maybe she was.

Maybe she was another person receiving only the version of reality Julian needed her to believe.

I reopened the airport photograph.

Her hand rested on Julian’s chest.

The sapphire necklace hung against her collarbone.

I wondered what he had promised her.

A new life?

Money?

Marriage?

Freedom?

Had he told her I was unstable?

Had he said the assets belonged to him?

Had he told her I knew about their relationship and accepted it?

With Julian, the most dangerous lie was rarely completely invented.

He preferred taking one true thing and building a false world around it.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Chloe.

I stared at her name.

Eleanor immediately said, “Don’t respond yet.”

I opened the preview without touching anything else.

Claire, I’m sorry.

Three words.

Another message followed.

I didn’t know about the tea.

Eleanor leaned closer.

Neither of us spoke.

A third arrived.

He told me you agreed to the financial arrangement.

My stomach tightened.

Then:

He lied to me too.

I looked at Eleanor.

“Can I answer now?”

“Not yet.”

A final message appeared.

He’s not going where he told you.

Then nothing.

I waited.

No further message came.

“Could Julian be using her phone?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Could she be trying to protect herself?”

“Yes.”

“Could she be telling the truth?”

“Yes.”

I hated how many answers remained possible.

We preserved the messages.

Then Marcus reported another development.

The airport booking associated with Julian showed a flight to Switzerland.

But secondary travel records suggested another reservation had been created under a variation of his identity.

The destination was not yet confirmed.

Julian might never have intended to take the obvious flight.

The airport photograph could have been theater.

A visible departure.

A mistress.

A stolen necklace.

Everything dramatic enough to keep my attention pointed in the wrong direction.

“What is he actually running from?” I asked.

Marcus did not answer.

He did not need to.

Eight point seven million dollars was only what he had traced so far.

Richard’s financial structures were older.

The false evidence against me had been assembled over months.

And somebody had just delivered proof—or an extraordinarily convincing fabrication—that a dead man might still be alive.

My phone rang again.

Unknown number.

I expected another threat.

Instead, a man spoke.

“Claire Sterling?”

“Who is this?”

“Someone who worked for Richard.”

Eleanor immediately began taking notes.

“What do you want?”

“To keep you from making the same mistake your husband made.”

“What mistake?”

“Thinking the money belongs to him.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Is Richard alive?”

The caller paused.

“You’re asking the wrong question.”

“Then give me the right one.”

“Ask why a man with millions of dollars would need the world to believe he was dead.”

The line disconnected.

I stared at the phone.

Eleanor tried the number through the proper channels, but it had already gone inactive.

I looked at Richard’s photograph again.

The silver watch on his wrist caught my attention.

I remembered that watch.

Julian had given it to him for his sixtieth birthday.

Custom engraving on the back.

R.S.

Richard wore it constantly.

If the photograph was staged using someone who resembled him, the watch was an unusually precise detail.

Unless the person who staged it knew exactly what I would recognize.

Which was equally disturbing.

By midmorning, Eleanor had arranged for the evidence concerning the sedative, threats, and financial records to be handled through appropriate investigators and counsel.

I gave up any idea of visiting the mausoleum.

Not because my curiosity had faded.

Because Julian had spent months relying on me to behave emotionally.

I would not reward him.

I would stay where witnesses knew I was.

I would preserve everything.

I would let professionals trace the money.

And I would stop giving Julian information for free.

At 9:17 a.m., Chloe sent another message.

This time, only an address appeared.

London.

Beneath it she wrote:

This is where he told me we were really going.

I showed Eleanor.

“Could be genuine,” she said.

“Or bait.”

“Yes.”

I waited for another message.

Instead, Julian called.

I let it ring.

Again.

I ignored it.

On the third attempt, he left a voicemail.

His voice sounded different.

No threats.

No superiority.

Fear.

He told me not to believe Chloe.

He said she was trying to save herself.

He said Liam had manipulated the accounts.

He said Richard had nothing to do with anything.

Then, at the end, he made the mistake that changed the direction of the investigation.

“Whatever happens,” Julian said, “do not go looking for my father.”

I replayed the sentence.

Eleanor heard it too.

My father.

Not my father’s records.

Not my father’s companies.

Not what my father left behind.

My father.

Present tense.

I looked at the recent photograph of Richard Sterling.

Then at the millions moving through structures created under his name.

Julian had spent the entire night trying to make me afraid of what he had done.

But as daylight filled the office, I understood that my husband might not be the architect of the oldest part of the scheme.

He might simply be the son who believed he could steal from it.

And somewhere beyond our house, beyond the airport, beyond Chloe and the forged signatures, a man I had watched my husband bury four years earlier might be waiting to see which of us discovered the truth first.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Chloe’s London Address Led
