stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat baby?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sterling leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you remember the girl\u2019s name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p>We already knew Elaine Sloan had been transferred to Vale.<\/p>\n<p>But Laura\u2019s memory made the chain different.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Vale had taken Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>Raised her.<\/p>\n<p>Later presented her as her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Elaine was my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut not Margaret\u2019s biological child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s face disappeared from frame for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>When he returned, he looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>Claire said quietly, \u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward her window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not turn this into proof you belong less anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed weakly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat advice sounds rehearsed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is becoming necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura watched them.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Marlene again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoan had children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre they alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, she cried openly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister had you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you are\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour niece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene started crying too.<\/p>\n<p>No dramatic music.<\/p>\n<p>No perfect reunion.<\/p>\n<p>Just two women separated by adults who decided a child could be moved like an asset.<\/p>\n<p>After several minutes, Laura\u2019s attorney asked to pause.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sterling agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Before disconnecting, Laura said one more thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remembered another child after Peter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked toward Marlene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wore a bracelet with a small silver heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother gasped.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anne whispered, \u201cEleanor had that bracelet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2019s sister?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wore it until she disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did Eleanor disappear?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c1973.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sterling asked, \u201cWas she declared dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He already understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother false death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anne began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe worked at St. Matthew\u2019s. She knew about Mercer.
