She is alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cL.M.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cInitials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marlene stood.<\/p>\n<p>Her chair scraped loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene\u2019s face had gone white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarlene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She backed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene looked at her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew someone with those initials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sterling said, \u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene\u2019s hands trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name stopped everything.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Not a company.<\/p>\n<p>A person.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cWho was Linda Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene sank back into the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy aunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Linda died before we met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what my mother told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c1962.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sterling asked, \u201cWas there a body?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered, \u201cOh my God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother said Linda was sick. Then one morning she was gone. There was a funeral.
