between families?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than Michael knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhat happened after Peter moved Adam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cMichael found blood the next morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe assumed Charles had taken Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did Peter take him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca breathed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had Adam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat condition was he in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you call a doctor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sloan whispered, \u201cNathan Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>The medical line.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sterling said, \u201cWas Nathan a licensed physician?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he treat Adam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Adam survive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence that followed seemed endless.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Rebecca said, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost dropped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene whispered, \u201cHe lived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor three days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter arranged transport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy Canada?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Charles had people looking everywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Charles trying to kill his son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s answer came hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles Renner was not Adam\u2019s father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The same statement again.<\/p>\n<p>The same broken lineage.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles raised him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was his father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sterling asked, \u201cBut you know why Adam mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was the first child Mercer successfully reassigned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sloan\u2019s voice lowered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdam was born under one name and placed into another family before he was three days old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared at Luca.<\/p>\n<p>I did too.<\/p>\n<p>Three days.<\/p>\n<p>My son was not even one day old.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cWhich family was he born into?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdam Renner was born Adam Carter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hospital room seemed to disappear.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Of the photograph of him as a child beside Peter.<\/p>\n<p>Of the book.<\/p>\n<p>Of the assignments.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the times people had said family as though it meant blood, law, ownership, obligation.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhose child was Adam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sloan said, \u201cMichael\u2019s younger brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Not Claire.<\/p>\n<p>Not Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Not Rebecca Sterling.<\/p>\n<p>Not even my mother, still connected on the other phone.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cDad had a brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed his brother died shortly after birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother made a sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca answered, \u201cNot until 2005.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fishing trip.<\/p>\n<p>The night at Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Adam.<\/p>\n<p>My father had gone into the warehouse and discovered that the man he thought belonged to Charles Renner was his own stolen brother.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why he fought him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael did not know until after the fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The distinction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>It made everything worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were they fighting about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe blue book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Adam wanted it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dad refused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he locked Adam downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen found out Adam was his brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my knuckles against my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered, \u201cEvan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could not look at her.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sloan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael spent the rest of his life trying to find him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I finally spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Adam went to Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter received two letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Adam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first six months later. The second almost four years later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Adam was alive. That he had found people connected to Mercer\u2019s early transfers. That he was not coming back until he understood what had been done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad see the letters?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly the first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not the second?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter hid it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cOf course he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sloan\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not act righteous, Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery one of you hid something because you decided someone else could not handle the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one argued.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhat happened to the second letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Rebecca, I found the first child. She is alive. They changed her name twice. Peter will understand what that means. Do not tell Charles. Do not tell Daniel.
