\u201cMichael said he panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he go back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next 11:14.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe left that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom said, \u201cMichael didn\u2019t believe the log.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he found blood downstairs the next morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca asked, \u201cA lot?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBody?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSigns someone was moved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cCharles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom said, \u201cMichael believed Charles took him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated while she was still speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Another message from Charles.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph loaded.<\/p>\n<p>Old.<\/p>\n<p>Grainy.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer Warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>A man lay on the concrete floor.<\/p>\n<p>Another man knelt beside him.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized my father immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The timestamp read March 17, 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cAdam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The injured man\u2019s face was turned partly away.<\/p>\n<p>But he was young.<\/p>\n<p>Blood spread beneath his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>A third figure stood near the edge of the image.<\/p>\n<p>Only one arm and part of a coat were visible.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca enlarged it.<\/p>\n<p>A ring.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy silver.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that ring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Marlene.<\/p>\n<p>Then Claire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter Sloan\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered, \u201cPeter was there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed again.<\/p>\n<p>One sentence.<\/p>\n<p>ASK ANNE WHY MICHAEL NEVER TOLD EVAN WHO HIS REAL FATHER WAS.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was still on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>She knew we had received something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>I could barely form the words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles says Dad never told me who my real father was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice finally came.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan, Michael was your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire reached for my arm.<\/p>\n<p>I let her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Michael my biological father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Not quietly this time.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stopped typing.<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s hand tightened around mine.<\/p>\n<p>I whispered, \u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom said, \u201cMichael believed Charles Renner was not Adam\u2019s biological father either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnne, what are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying the records were switched before any of you understood what Mercer was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca asked, \u201cWho did Michael believe fathered Evan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom went silent again.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter Sloan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name seemed to strike every wall.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the photograph on my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Peter standing over my father and Adam.<\/p>\n<p>Peter, whose signature appeared in Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Peter, whose wife had died.<\/p>\n<p>Peter, whose childhood photograph had been hidden in the blue book beside Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered, \u201cThen why put Adam\u2019s name beside Evan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo hide Peter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Peter need hiding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s next words came slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Peter was not supposed to have children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cThe agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat agreement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original Mercer founders agreed that no custodian\u2019s biological child could inherit direct control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo prevent dynasties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo they assigned children across lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>Mom said, \u201cMichael found evidence that the assignments weren\u2019t only paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She whispered, \u201cSome babies were actually moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween families?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca closed her laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the first uncomplicated answer he had given all night.<\/p>\n<p>I asked Mom, \u201cWas I moved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I gave birth to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t answer who my father was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad know before I was born?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did he learn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you were sixteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fishing trip.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Adam.<\/p>\n<p>Everything circled back.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>10:04 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Less than two hours until the Mercer access reset.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said, \u201cNobody goes to that warehouse alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Claire said, \u201cEvan isn\u2019t going at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a son who was born today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was nothing to argue with.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the number.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said, \u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas did not bother with hello.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are Evan and Claire?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep them that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause somebody entered Mercer twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas heard me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho entered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how do you know someone did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still have one sensor on the lower archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me the old system was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone restored power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca asked, \u201cCan you see inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked relieved.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey arrived seven minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found the front door locked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe responding officer reported movement inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe couldn\u2019t identify them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then we heard another voice near Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>A woman.<\/p>\n<p>Older.<\/p>\n<p>Sharp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said something away from the receiver.<\/p>\n<p>The woman ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan Carter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman said, \u201cAnne knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother made a sound through the other phone.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anne whispered one word.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our attorney looked up.<\/p>\n<p>The woman on Thomas\u2019s line laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered, \u201cWho is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca Sloan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter Sloan\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n<p>The woman Daniel had told us died in a car accident in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>The supposedly dead woman spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Daniel his records are as unreliable as his conscience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel could barely breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw the report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw what Mercer wanted you to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sterling leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere Michael left the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sloan answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo finish what Adam started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he start?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpening the lower archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re twenty-one years late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then my mother said, \u201cEvan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I lifted her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else Michael told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe night he came home from Mercer, after the fight with Adam, he said he had made a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat mistake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he had opened a room Peter told him never to open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sterling looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cThere was no room below the lower archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, there was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael drew it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>Mom continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe drew a door behind the shelving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire asked, \u201cWhat was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anne began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael wouldn\u2019t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he tell anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked toward the disconnected phone.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cAnd what did Dad say about Adam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom was silent for so long I thought the call had dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Adam saw what was behind that door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018If Evan ever opens that building, he\u2019ll learn what I did to
