There\u2019s an envelope from Magnolia Gardens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not touch anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already photographed what I could see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood. Do not reach into the vehicle again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if those materials relate to the documents we found, I want their condition preserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Candice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think she intended to take me there today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that possibility is serious enough that we treat it as factually unresolved until we have the paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was Rebecca: precise even when frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do I do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay outside. Stay near Thomas. I\u2019m contacting the deputy who handled the order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that necessary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer chilled me.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca did not dramatize.<\/p>\n<p>Candice began pacing beside her SUV.<\/p>\n<p>Then another car turned onto the street.<\/p>\n<p>Julian.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled into the driveway too quickly, one tire crossing onto the grass. His tie hung loose, and his face was flushed when he stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice hurried toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian barely looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is in the car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian, she has completely misunderstood\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is in your car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked past her.<\/p>\n<p>Candice caught his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked at her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Then at her face.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly, he removed her fingers.<\/p>\n<p>He opened the rear passenger door.<\/p>\n<p>My son stared inside.<\/p>\n<p>At the suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>At the cardboard box.<\/p>\n<p>At Arthur\u2019s photograph.<\/p>\n<p>At the Magnolia Gardens envelope.<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is Mom\u2019s suitcase packed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was helping her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted to try Magnolia Gardens for a few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Candice continued speaking to Julian as though I had not spoken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s lonely. The house is too much for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never visited Magnolia Gardens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean we haven\u2019t discussed it,\u201d Candice said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t remember every conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held her gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy medical evaluation says otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat medical evaluation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one I arranged after discovering documents claiming I was mentally incompetent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward his wife.<\/p>\n<p>Candice threw up her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to protect her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom herself!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words echoed down the street.<\/p>\n<p>A dog began barking behind a neighboring fence.<\/p>\n<p>Candice pointed at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe can barely see. She uses a walker. She misses appointments. Someone has to make decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing old does not make her your property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>So did Candice.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time in years I had heard my son draw a boundary between us.<\/p>\n<p>Candice heard it too.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice softened instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me those papers were insurance forms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey concerned her future care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Mom wanted my name on the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed she did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said she told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe implied it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something changed in Julian\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the SUV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen the trunk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trunk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian gave a short, humorless laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive minutes ago you said everything inside belonged to Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice reached for the driver\u2019s door.<\/p>\n<p>Julian blocked her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen the trunk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m asking why my mother\u2019s possessions are packed in your car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>The careful mask vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou turned him against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hired a lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou changed the locks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou humiliated me in front of everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced at the neighboring curtains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have handled most of that yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas covered his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Julian almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Candice saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Her composure shattered.<\/p>\n<p>She dug through her purse, found the key fob and stabbed the trunk button.<\/p>\n<p>The latch clicked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian went first.<\/p>\n<p>I followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, stay there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have spent four years being told where to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pushed the walker forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian lifted the trunk.<\/p>\n<p>Three boxes filled most of it.<\/p>\n<p>My winter clothes.<\/p>\n<p>Shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Photo albums.<\/p>\n<p>The cedar jewelry box Arthur had made.<\/p>\n<p>A lamp from my bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath those objects lay several folders.<\/p>\n<p>Julian picked up the first.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared across the top.<\/p>\n<p>Below it were the words RESIDENT INTAKE DOCUMENTS.<\/p>\n<p>Candice lunged.<\/p>\n<p>The movement told us everything before Julian opened it.<\/p>\n<p>He read.<\/p>\n<p>His face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Candice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen were you going to tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell you what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdmission date. Today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My legs weakened.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas brought a chair from the porch.<\/p>\n<p>I sat.<\/p>\n<p>Julian continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArrival between twelve thirty and one thirty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my watch.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven sixteen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrimary contact,\u201d Julian said. \u201cCandice Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial representative. Candice Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another page.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d Candice whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Julian read more slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModerate cognitive decline. Frequent confusion. Poor judgment. Wandering risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never told anyone that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacilities require certain language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI described the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did what was necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou intended to take her there today without telling her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe would never agree!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe cannot stay here forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI don\u2019t think I ever did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sheriff\u2019s vehicle turned onto our street.<\/p>\n<p>Candice saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca arrived less than two minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy reviewed the court order. Rebecca examined the photographs I had taken. Julian showed her the trunk.<\/p>\n<p>Candice began explaining.<\/p>\n<p>I had agreed.<\/p>\n<p>She had been helping.<\/p>\n<p>The placement was temporary.<\/p>\n<p>The boxes were convenient.<\/p>\n<p>The paperwork was preliminary.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca let her finish.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked, \u201cWhere is Evelyn\u2019s identification?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca turned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere do you normally keep your passport, Social Security card, birth certificate and property documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a case inside my bedroom closet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked toward the boxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian, would you check?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened another one.<\/p>\n<p>Bank records.<\/p>\n<p>Tax returns.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s death certificate.<\/p>\n<p>My birth certificate.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance papers.<\/p>\n<p>My passport.<\/p>\n<p>The original deed to the house.<\/p>\n<p>Julian sat on the edge of the trunk.<\/p>\n<p>He held the deed as though it had become unexpectedly heavy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was keeping things safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn your car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was organizing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause somebody had to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the packed boxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were taking everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice\u2019s mouth twisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was saving us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaving you from what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice realized what she had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur situation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said saving us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian, not here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we had almost sixty thousand dollars in savings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I watched my son\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much is there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her lips moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the rest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat investments?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me three weeks ago we had fifty-eight thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to replace it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice looked toward my house.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody needed an explanation.<\/p>\n<p>My house was not merely something she expected Julian to inherit eventually.<\/p>\n<p>It was her solution.<\/p>\n<p>She needed it sold.<\/p>\n<p>Soon.<\/p>\n<p>That explained the rush.<\/p>\n<p>The guardianship.<\/p>\n<p>The deed.<\/p>\n<p>The facility.<\/p>\n<p>My packed suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much debt?\u201d Julian asked.<\/p>\n<p>Candice shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventy-three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundred?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThousand?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began sobbing.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s attention shifted toward a narrow red folder beneath the Magnolia Gardens paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t seen that one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice moved toward it.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is in that folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrivate documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen there should be no reason for panic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>Candice whispered, \u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>The first page made him frown.<\/p>\n<p>The second made his hands shake.<\/p>\n<p>By the third, he sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Candice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>His expression was not anger.<\/p>\n<p>It was guilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis didn\u2019t begin with the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it begin with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian turned the page toward her.<\/p>\n<p>She read several lines.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since I had met her, Rebecca lost her calm expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candice said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca repeated the question.<\/p>\n<p>Candice finally looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur gave it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the walker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Arthur?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had been dead eleven years.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks before his death, according to the date at the top of the document, he had signed something addressed with my name.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the signature.<\/p>\n<p>I had watched him write it thousands of times.<\/p>\n<p>Birthday cards.<\/p>\n<p>Checks.<\/p>\n<p>Letters.<\/p>\n<p>Anniversary notes.<\/p>\n<p>I held out my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He placed it in my palm.<\/p>\n<p>The print dissolved into gray lines before my failing eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>Candice shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead it,\u201d I repeated.<\/p>\n<p>My son looked at the first paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>And before he spoke, I understood that whatever Arthur had hidden inside that red folder frightened Candice more than the deputy, the court order,
