pain crossed her face together.<\/p>\n<p>I understood the relief.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I had been absolved.<\/p>\n<p>Because responsibility had returned to the person who made the choice.<\/p>\n<p>Kang Jun.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lou took back the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>Kang Jun wrote:<\/p>\n<p>I know what Theresa believes I should do. I also know what I am going to do. I will marry Mary and tell myself I can explain later. This is cowardice. I am writing the word so I cannot rename it love.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lou closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew exactly what he was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She cried quietly.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>There was no defense left to construct for him.<\/p>\n<p>That was strangely peaceful.<\/p>\n<p>Kang Jun had loved her.<\/p>\n<p>Kang Jun had also denied her information that might have changed her decision to marry him.<\/p>\n<p>Both were true.<\/p>\n<p>The letter did not ask forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>It did not predict that everything would work out.<\/p>\n<p>It admitted cowardice before consequences arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lou folded her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I can stop investigating him now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then her phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz.<\/p>\n<p>The final American investigation into Voss\u2019s motel room had produced one unexpected result.<\/p>\n<p>The last lie Voss referred to had been identified.<\/p>\n<p>Not about Mary Lou.<\/p>\n<p>Not about Kang Jun.<\/p>\n<p>About the annual eighty-thousand-dollar transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators had reconstructed their purpose from Harper\u2019s files and Kang Jun\u2019s original ledger.<\/p>\n<p>I felt Mary Lou stiffen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat purpose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz explained.<\/p>\n<p>The transfers had never been intended merely to support me.<\/p>\n<p>They were signals.<\/p>\n<p>Each successful transfer confirmed that the American side of Kang Jun\u2019s evidence remained uncompromised.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve confirmations.<\/p>\n<p>But there was another condition.<\/p>\n<p>If I ever spent more than a specific percentage of the annual amount, the system would assume I had been approached, pressured, or financially manipulated.<\/p>\n<p>The alternate route would activate.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey monitored my spending?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly through account thresholds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lou looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo even the money was surveillance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Ruiz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut not Choi\u2019s originally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kang Jun designed it.<\/p>\n<p>Choi later took control of the mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lee.<\/p>\n<p>Each man repurposed it.<\/p>\n<p>A safety system became a leash.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz continued.<\/p>\n<p>There was one final fact.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, I saved most of the money.<\/p>\n<p>Because I did not trust it.<\/p>\n<p>Because spending eighty thousand dollars from a daughter who would not come home felt wrong.<\/p>\n<p>My refusal to use it had repeatedly signaled that I was uncompromised.<\/p>\n<p>Without knowing it, I had kept Kang Jun\u2019s archive sequence alive.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lou stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saved me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saved money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept the system from changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know there was a system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt matters to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not turn me into another person who planned your life from far away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t save you because I was clever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I squeezed her fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was your mother. I missed you.
