16 – The Reservoir Held Kang Jun’s Final Recording, but Reaching It Forced Mary Lou to Confront the Choice Her Husband Never Had Time to Make

We arrived near the reservoir before dawn.

The road narrowed through wooded hills until city lights disappeared behind us.

Snow covered the shoulders.

The vehicle’s headlights swept across bare trees, guardrails, and occasional signs I could not read.

Ji-hoon drove.

Soo-jin sat beside him.

Mary Lou and I were in the back.

Two unmarked police vehicles followed at a distance, despite Ji-hoon’s objections.

Compromise.

Nobody trusted anyone enough to feel good about it.

Mary Lou had been quiet for nearly an hour.

I touched her hand.

Cold.

“You’re thinking too loudly.”

She looked at me.

“That’s not a thing.”

“It was when you were fourteen.”

That earned the smallest smile.

Then she looked out the window.

“If the recording is real, it could end this.”

“Part of it.”

“Maybe enough.”

I understood what she wanted.

Not revenge.

An ending.

After twelve years, even an imperfect ending can look holy.

Ji-hoon turned off the main road onto an unpaved track.

The police vehicles stopped farther back.

“We walk from here.”

Snow crunched under our shoes.

The air smelled of pine and frozen earth.

Ahead, through the trees, the reservoir appeared as a dark sheet under the weak dawn.

Ji-hoon checked the coordinates.

“Three hundred meters.”

We followed a narrow path toward the shoreline.

Mary Lou stayed near him.

Not from trust.

Because she wanted answers.

“Did Kang Jun ever come here after we married?”

Ji-hoon nodded.

“Twice.”

“With you?”

“Once.”

“What did he say?”

“That if everything failed, this place should hold the truth.”

Mary Lou laughed softly.

“He really thought like that.”

“Yes.”

“Every conversation was a contingency plan.”

Ji-hoon looked at her.

“Not every conversation.”

She did not answer.

We reached a concrete spillway.

The coordinates pointed toward an old maintenance structure built into the hillside.

Rusting door.

Faded warning sign.

Locked.

Ji-hoon took out bolt cutters.

Soo-jin raised an eyebrow.

“You carry those regularly?”

“Recently.”

The lock broke.

Inside was darkness.

We used flashlights.

The tunnel smelled damp and metallic.

Water echoed somewhere behind the walls.

I immediately disliked it.

“People hide evidence in banks,” I said. “Normal people.”

Mary Lou whispered, “Normal left this story twelve years ago.”

Fair.

The coordinates led us deeper.

At the end of the tunnel stood an old control panel.

Ji-hoon examined it.

“Nothing.”

Mary Lou shone her light across the floor.

“Wait.”

Scratches near the base.

We moved the panel.

Behind it was a recessed cavity.

Inside sat a sealed metal tube.

Nobody touched it at first.

After years of chasing secrets, finding one felt dangerous.

Soo-jin photographed everything.

Then Ji-hoon removed the tube.

It opened with a threaded cap.

Inside was a memory card wrapped in plastic.

And another envelope.

Mary Lou’s name.

She stared.

I touched her shoulder.

“You don’t have to read it here.”

“Yes, I do.”

She opened it.

One page.

Kang Jun’s handwriting.

She read silently.

Then handed it to me.

Mary,

If you found this, I failed to come back.

My chest tightened.

He wrote that he had made the recording against Ji-hoon’s advice.

He met Lee Sang-ho because he believed he could negotiate Mary Lou’s release from the network.

He knew it was dangerous.

He also knew leaving without confronting Lee might create a pursuit that would follow Mary Lou abroad.

He wanted something Lee feared enough to keep distance.

Blackmail.

Protection through leverage.

The same poison everyone in this world seemed to understand.

Then Kang Jun wrote:

If I die, do not finish what I started unless finishing it is your choice.

Mary Lou covered her face.

Ji-hoon looked away.

I continued reading.

You owe me nothing.

Not revenge.

Not loyalty to my plan.

Not years of your life.

If you can walk away, walk.

Mary Lou made a sound between a laugh and a sob.

Nine years.

She had done exactly what he told her she did not owe.

I folded the letter.

“Did you ever see this?” I asked Ji-hoon.

“No.”

“Would it have changed what you did?”

He took too long to answer.

“I don’t know.”

Mary Lou lowered her hands.

“That’s honest.”

He nodded.

Soo-jin inserted the memory card into an isolated recorder she had brought.

An audio file appeared.

One hour, seventeen minutes.

We listened.

Kang Jun’s voice first.

Then Lee Sang-ho.

No ambiguity.

No vague implication.

Lee spoke with the confidence of a man who believed the room belonged to him.

He accused Kang Jun of disloyalty.

Kang Jun threatened exposure.

Lee laughed.

Then came names.

Companies.

Payments.

A missing accountant.

Ji-hoon.

Lee said he had ordered Ji-hoon “removed.”

Ji-hoon’s jaw tightened.

Then Kang Jun mentioned Mary Lou.

His voice changed.

“Leave her outside this.”

Lee replied.

“You brought her inside when you married her.”

Mary Lou closed her eyes.

The sentence was cruel.

It was also true.

Kang Jun said he would surrender documents in exchange for Mary Lou being allowed to leave Korea.

Lee asked whether Kang Jun genuinely believed agreements still existed between them.

Then came the statement Soo-jin had hoped for.

Clear.

Direct.

Lee instructed Kang Jun to stop copying records.

He said Choi would “handle” him if he attempted to leave.

Kang Jun asked whether that meant murder.

Lee answered:

“If that becomes necessary.”

No euphemism.

No legal interpretation needed.

Soo-jin stopped the recording.

“That is enough.”

“For what?” I asked.

“Warrants. Charges. Combined with Park’s testimony and the financial archive—much more.”

Mary Lou stared at the recorder.

“Play the rest.”

“There may be nothing else relevant.”

“Play it.”

Soo-jin resumed.

The conversation became personal.

Kang Jun told Lee he was finished.

Lee mocked him for becoming sentimental after marriage.

Kang Jun replied that Mary Lou had shown him what ordinary life felt like.

My throat tightened.

Then Lee said something unexpected.

“Ordinary was never available to men like us.”

Kang Jun answered.

“It should have been.”

The recording ended several minutes later.

Silence filled the tunnel.

Mary Lou took the memory card.

Held it between two fingers.

So small.

Nine years of death and fear reduced to something smaller than a postage stamp.

“What now?” she asked.

Soo-jin answered.

“We copy it immediately.”

Ji-hoon nodded.

“Then authorities move on Lee.”

Mary Lou looked at him.

“And me?”

Nobody spoke.

She laughed quietly.

“That question keeps getting lost.”

I stepped closer.

“It doesn’t now.”

Soo-jin said Mary Lou would still need to cooperate with investigators.

Her involvement in transfers would be examined.

Her coercion could be documented.

Kang Jun’s files, Choi’s surveillance, Park’s testimony, and the annual patterns all supported her account.

But there would be no magical erasure.

No instant flight home.

No clean ending.

Mary Lou listened.

Then nodded.

“Fine.”

The word surprised me.

“Fine?”

“I can live with explaining what I did.”

She looked toward the tunnel entrance.

“I couldn’t live with pretending anymore.”

A sound came from outside.

Branch snapping.

Ji-hoon raised one hand.

Silence.

Another sound.

Footsteps.

More than one person.

Soo-jin reached for her phone.

No signal underground.

Ji-hoon switched off his flashlight.

We did the same.

Darkness swallowed us.

Mary Lou moved close enough that her shoulder touched mine.

Ji-hoon whispered, “Stay behind the panel.”

“No,” Mary Lou whispered back.

He did not argue.

Progress.

Voices approached outside.

Korean.

Ji-hoon’s posture changed.

“Lee’s men?”

Soo-jin whispered.

“Maybe.”

Then another voice.

Choi.

Mary Lou recognized him too.

Her hand tightened around mine.

Of course.

Choi had followed the same trail.

Perhaps from Ji-hoon’s office.

Perhaps from Lee.

Perhaps both.

His voice came closer.

Ji-hoon motioned toward a side maintenance passage.

“Go.”

Soo-jin took the recorder.

Mary Lou kept the memory card.

We moved.

The side tunnel narrowed quickly.

Water dripped from the ceiling.

Behind us, metal scraped.

The outer door opening.

Choi entered.

He called Mary Lou’s name.

Not loudly.

Almost conversational.

She stopped.

I pulled her.

“Keep going.”

His voice followed us.

“You found it.”

Mary Lou whispered, “He knows.”

“Let him.”

We reached another door.

Locked.

Ji-hoon tried the handle.

Nothing.

No bolt cutters this time.

Behind us, flashlights appeared.

Choi’s men were in the main tunnel.

Trapped.

Soo-jin looked around.

“Another exit?”

Ji-hoon shook his head.

Mary Lou reached into her coat.

The memory card.

She held it out to Soo-jin.

“Take this.”

“No.”

“Take it.”

Soo-jin did.

Mary Lou turned back toward the lights.

“What are you doing?” I whispered.

“Buying time.”

“No.”

“Mom.”

“No.”

She looked at me.

Something in her face was calm.

Not defeated.

Decided.

“For nine years I survived because Choi thought fear made my choices predictable.”

I shook my head.

“You don’t owe Kang Jun this.”

“I know.”

The answer stopped me.

She touched my cheek.

“This isn’t for him.”

Then she turned.

Choi emerged into view.

Two men behind him.

No visible gun.

That meant nothing.

“Mary.”

She stepped forward.

I remained beside her.

He noticed.

“Theresa too.”

“Lucky you,” I said.

His mouth twitched.

His eyes shifted to Ji-hoon.

Recognition.

“So the dead brother finally appears.”

Ji-hoon said nothing.

Choi looked at Mary Lou.

“Give me the recording.”

“No.”

“You cannot leave this tunnel.”

“Neither can you if police are outside.”

His expression changed slightly.

A bluff.

Maybe.

He did not know.

Mary Lou continued.

“You ran from the warehouse. Your accounts are exposed. Park is talking. Han is alive.”

Choi’s jaw tightened at Park’s name.

“You still think Lee will protect you?”

That landed.

Choi looked toward Ji-hoon.

Then back at her.

“You understand nothing.”

“Then explain.”

For years, Choi had controlled conversations.

Now Mary Lou held the silence until he filled it.

“Lee is finished,” Choi said.

Ji-hoon frowned.

“What?”

Choi laughed softly.

“You think this recording matters because Lee is still sitting in his house drinking expensive tea?”

Soo-jin stepped forward.

“What happened?”

Choi’s gaze moved to her.

“By now, he is either gone or dead.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Because men like Lee do not survive exposure.”

Mary Lou watched him carefully.

“You warned him.”

“No.”

“You worked for him.”

“I worked around him.”

Something in Choi’s voice changed.

Resentment.

Perhaps even hatred.

Ji-hoon said, “You kept records as insurance.”

“Yes.”

“Against Lee.”

“Against everyone.”

For the first time, I understood that Choi’s loyalty had always been fiction.

Money.

Fear.

Survival.

That was all.

Mary Lou said, “Then why do you want the recording?”

“Because if I have it, I still have something to trade.”

“With whom?”

Choi did not answer.

Soo-jin understood first.

“Authorities.”

Choi smiled.

He wanted leverage for himself.

Not to protect Lee.

To buy survival.

Mary Lou almost laughed.

“Nine years of threatening me, and now you want a deal.”

“Yes.”

“Then make one.”

Choi’s expression shifted.

“What?”

“With investigators.”

“I need the recording.”

“No.”

“Mary.”

“You don’t control the evidence anymore.”

She glanced at me.

“None of us do.”

That was true.

Copies existed elsewhere.

Park had talked.

Han was alive.

The archive had spread.

The system Kang Jun built had finally escaped every individual hand.

Choi seemed to realize it.

His face changed.

Not dramatically.

The tension simply left his shoulders.

A man discovering that the weapon he had spent years guarding had already been duplicated beyond usefulness.

Then one of the men behind him drew a gun.

Everything happened at once.

Ji-hoon lunged.

Soo-jin ducked.

I grabbed Mary Lou.

The gun fired.

The sound inside the tunnel was enormous.

Stone threw the echo back at us.

Ji-hoon fell.

Mary Lou screamed.

Choi shouted at the gunman in Korean.

Another shot.

Then voices from the entrance.

Police.

Real this time.

The gunman turned.

Choi hit his arm.

The weapon fell.

Officers flooded the tunnel seconds later.

Commands.

Hands.

Bodies against walls.

I dropped beside Ji-hoon.

Blood spread across his coat near the shoulder.

He was conscious.

“Not dead,” he gasped.

“That family tradition is becoming tiresome,” I said.

He actually laughed.

Mary Lou knelt beside him.

For one suspended second, she looked at the brother of the husband she had lost.

A man she had every reason to resent.

A man who had still risked himself when the gun appeared.

“Why?” she asked.

Ji-hoon understood the larger question.

Why hide?

Why watch?

Why wait?

Why survive when Kang Jun did not?

His face tightened.

“I thought staying unseen kept everyone alive.”

Mary Lou looked at his wound.

“Did it?”

He closed his eyes.

“No.”

Police pulled Choi to his feet.

His hands were cuffed behind him.

He looked at Mary Lou.

No threat left.

No performance.

Just exhaustion.

For nine years, that man had shaped the boundaries of her life.

Now
