14 – Kang Jun’s Hidden Brother Had Been Declared Dead Years Earlier, Yet Every Trail We Followed Suggested He Was Still Moving Just Ahead of Choi

Finding a man who officially died fourteen years earlier turned out to be difficult.

That was Soo-jin’s understated description.

Mine was simpler.

It was impossible.

Ji-hoon Kang had a death certificate.

A cremation record.

A closed bank account.

A photograph attached to a memorial notice.

On paper, the man no longer existed.

We sat in a secure office while Soo-jin spread printed records across a table.

Mary Lou stood beside the window, one arm wrapped around her ribs.

“They weren’t close,” she said.

“How do you know?” I asked.

“Kang Jun talked about his childhood.”

“Apparently not accurately.”

Her expression tightened.

Fair point.

According to Park’s statement, Ji-hoon was Kang Jun’s younger brother by six years.

Where Kang Jun moved toward business, Ji-hoon studied engineering.

He disliked Choi from the beginning.

The brothers argued over Kang Jun’s growing involvement with Lee Sang-ho’s network.

Then Ji-hoon discovered that one of Lee’s companies was laundering money through infrastructure contracts.

“He threatened to report it,” Soo-jin said.

“Apparently that family had a habit of doing dangerous things with evidence,” I muttered.

Mary Lou looked at me.

“Too soon?”

“Probably.”

It was the first almost-normal exchange we had managed all day.

Soo-jin continued.

Ji-hoon’s car was found burned near a mountain road.

Human remains inside were identified as his.

Case closed.

Except Park claimed Kang Jun never believed the body was Ji-hoon’s.

“Why?” I asked.

“Dental records.”

“What about them?”

“They were supplied by a private clinic connected to Lee Sang-ho.”

I stared.

“So even the identification might have been arranged.”

“Yes.”

Mary Lou turned from the window.

“If Kang Jun believed his brother survived, why hide it from me?”

Soo-jin did not answer.

I did.

“To protect him.”

Mary Lou laughed without humor.

“Of course.”

The same answer again.

Protection through silence.

Secrets disguised as shields.

Kang Jun had never learned another language for love.

We traced Ji-hoon’s known history.

Old university records.

Employment.

A photograph from military service.

Soo-jin found an image of him standing beside Kang Jun at a family funeral.

The resemblance was obvious.

Same eyes.

Different posture.

Kang Jun stood straight, controlled.

Ji-hoon leaned slightly toward him, smiling as though someone had said something inappropriate.

Mary Lou stared at the photograph.

“I’ve seen him.”

Soo-jin turned.

“Where?”

Mary Lou pointed.

“Wedding.”

My breath caught.

“The second man.”

The family friend.

Mary Lou nodded slowly.

“Kang Jun introduced him as Mr. Kim.”

“Not our Mr. Kim?” I asked.

“No.”

She touched the photograph.

“He barely spoke to me.”

Soo-jin looked stunned.

“If that was Ji-hoon, Kang Jun brought his supposedly dead brother to your wedding.”

“Why?”

Nobody knew.

I tried to remember the ceremony.

Two men beside Kang Jun.

One older—Lee Sang-ho, apparently.

The other quieter.

I remembered him only vaguely.

Medium height.

Dark suit.

He shook my hand.

Had he known who I was?

Almost certainly.

That realization unsettled me.

Mary Lou sat.

“So Ji-hoon was alive twelve years ago.”

“If the man was him.”

“It was.”

She sounded certain.

“What did he say to you?” I asked.

“Almost nothing.”

“Anything strange?”

Mary Lou thought.

“He gave me a gift.”

Soo-jin leaned forward.

“What?”

“A small wooden box.”

“Where is it?”

Her face changed.

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

“Kang Jun packed most of our wedding gifts when we moved.”

“Did you ever open it?”

“Yes.”

“What was inside?”

“A compass.”

I frowned.

“A real one?”

“Yes. Brass. Old.”

“What happened to it?”

“Kang Jun kept it in his desk.”

Soo-jin stood.

“The house.”

We were driven there with investigators.

Returning felt strange after everything that had happened.

The front door now carried an evidence seal.

Officers catalogued the money upstairs.

The empty living room no longer felt mysterious.

It felt exposed.

Mary Lou entered Kang Jun’s old office.

The desk had been searched already.

Drawers removed.

Cabinets opened.

Nothing resembling a compass.

“Could Choi have taken it?” I asked.

“He searched the house after Kang Jun died.”

“Then probably.”

Mary Lou shook her head.

“Kang Jun hid important things in ordinary places.”

She began examining the desk itself.

Underside.

Back panels.

Drawer rails.

I watched.

“So this is where you learned it.”

“What?”

“Secret compartments.”

She almost smiled.

“Maybe.”

After twenty minutes, we found nothing.

An investigator asked whether the compass appeared in the inventory from the night of Kang Jun’s death.

Soo-jin checked.

No.

“So it vanished before or after the crash,” I said.

Mary Lou walked to the bookshelf.

Most shelves were nearly empty now.

Evidence teams had removed documents.

She touched the back panel.

Then stopped.

“What?”

“The shelf used to be deeper.”

I stared.

“How can a shelf be deeper?”

“This one.”

She pulled at the wood.

Nothing.

Then pressed one corner.

A narrow panel released.

Inside was a long empty slot.

Not large enough for a book.

Exactly large enough for a small wooden box.

Someone had found it first.

Mary Lou cursed quietly.

“Choi?”

“Maybe.”

Soo-jin examined the compartment.

“No damage.”

Again.

Whoever opened it knew how.

Mary Lou stared at the empty slot.

“Ji-hoon.”

A possibility became increasingly difficult to dismiss.

We checked security footage from the neighborhood.

Most cameras retained only limited histories.

But one shop owner across the street had a private system storing months of recordings.

Two months earlier, a man entered Mary Lou’s property shortly after midnight.

Black coat.

Cap.

Face partially hidden.

He remained inside seventeen minutes.

When he left, he carried something under his arm.

A box.

Mary Lou leaned toward the screen.

“Pause.”

The image froze.

The man turned slightly.

His face remained unclear.

But his right hand was visible.

A scar crossed the back of it.

Mary Lou inhaled.

“What?”

“The wedding.”

“You remember his hand?”

“He shook mine.”

Twelve years of missing someone teaches you to remember strange details.

A face fades.

A scar does not.

Soo-jin pulled up Ji-hoon’s military photograph.

His right hand was visible.

There was a faint line across the knuckles.

Same location.

Not proof.

Enough.

“So he entered the house two months ago,” I said.

“The same time Park placed the final package,” Soo-jin added.

Mary Lou stared at the frozen image.

“He knew.”

“What?”

“He knew I was close.”

“Close to what?”

“The final transfer.”

The twelfth fragment.

HOME.

The archive was nearing completion.

Ji-hoon appeared.

Retrieved Kang Jun’s hidden compass.

Then, after I arrived, someone emptied the grave compartment.

Every event connected.

Soo-jin checked traffic cameras near the cemetery.

A dark sedan left shortly before police arrived.

The plate belonged to a company registered under another company.

That company traced through two shell corporations.

Finally, a name appeared.

JH Consulting.

Soo-jin leaned back.

“JH.”

“Ji-hoon,” Mary Lou said.

The registered office was in Incheon.

Investigators moved quickly.

By evening, the location was under surveillance.

A small engineering consultancy occupied the third floor of a modern office building.

The official director was a man named Han Min-woo.

Different identity.

Different birth date.

Photograph unavailable publicly.

“Convenient,” I said.

Police obtained an old business registration image.

It loaded slowly on the screen.

Then the face appeared.

Older.

Hair grayer.

Thinner.

But unmistakably the man from Kang Jun’s wedding.

Mary Lou sat down.

“Ji-hoon.”

Alive.

For fourteen years.

Living under another name less than an hour away.

I waited for anger.

It came.

“He knew where I was.”

Soo-jin said nothing.

“He knew what Choi was doing.”

“We don’t know that.”

“He retrieved Kang Jun’s packages.”

“Yes.”

“He entered my house.”

“Yes.”

“He watched the grave.”

“Likely.”

Mary Lou stood.

“And he let me stay trapped for nine years.”

The room went quiet.

That was the real wound.

Not that Ji-hoon lived.

That he had apparently lived nearby while Mary Lou remained under Choi’s control.

“What if he couldn’t help?” I asked.

She turned on me.

“For nine years?”

“I don’t know.”

“Neither do I.”

Her eyes filled.

“That’s the problem.”

An investigator entered.

Ji-hoon—or Han Min-woo—had left the office before surveillance began.

His destination was unknown.

But they had found something in company records.

A storage facility rental.

Soo-jin read the address.

Mary Lou went still.

“What?”

“I know that place.”

“Why?”

“Kang Jun took me there once.”

“When?”

“Our first year in Korea.”

“What was there?”

“He said it was overflow storage for the import company.”

The facility sat near Incheon’s industrial waterfront.

Police prepared a search.

This time, Mary Lou was not allowed to accompany them.

Neither was I.

We waited.

Waiting remained unbearable.

An hour passed.

Then another.

Finally, Soo-jin’s phone rang.

She listened.

Her face changed.

“What did they find?”

“A room.”

“What kind?”

She put the call on speaker.

An investigator described shelves containing copied financial records, surveillance photographs, old phones, passports, and sealed boxes marked with dates.

A private archive.

Bigger than Kang Jun’s.

Then he mentioned a wall.

Covered in photographs.

Mary Lou.

Me.

Kang Jun.

Choi.

Lee Sang-ho.

Park.

Soo-jin.

Years of movements mapped with strings and handwritten notes.

I felt cold.

Ji-hoon had been watching everyone.

“Anything recent?” Mary Lou asked.

The investigator paused.

“Yes.”

A photograph of me arriving at Seoul airport.

Taken from inside the terminal.

Not from Choi’s surveillance.

Different angle.

Ji-hoon had known I arrived.

Another photograph showed Mary Lou and me leaving her house through the service lane.

“He followed us,” I said.

Mary Lou closed her eyes.

“Why?”

Then the investigator described one final item.

A large envelope placed in the center of the desk.

Written across it in English:

FOR THERESA.

My name again.

Every person in this family seemed determined to leave me letters instead of explanations.

Police photographed the envelope before opening it.

Inside was a single sheet.

Soo-jin received the image.

She turned the phone toward me.

The handwriting was not Kang Jun’s.

A short message.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, CHOI FOUND THE GRAVE.

DO NOT TRUST THE POLICE SEARCH FOR ME.

LEE SANG-HO KNOWS YOU ARE HERE.

MARY MUST NOT RETURN HOME.

THE COMPASS POINTS TO WHERE KANG JUN HID THE ONLY RECORD LEE CANNOT SURVIVE.

Below that was a time.

Midnight.

And a location.

Soo-jin stared at it.

“He wants to meet.”

Mary Lou read the message.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“He addressed it to me.”

“That doesn’t make it safe.”

“He saved something from the grave.”

“Maybe.”

“He knows about the compass.”

“Which is exactly why this could be bait.”

Soo-jin agreed.

“Mary’s right.”

I folded my arms.

“You two are becoming annoying.”

Neither smiled.

I looked again at the message.

Lee Sang-ho knows you are here.

The danger had changed.

Choi was no longer the only man hunting us.

Maybe not even the most dangerous one.

I tapped the final sentence.

“The compass points somewhere.”

Mary Lou stared.

“If Ji-hoon has it.”

“Then we need him.”

She shook her head.

“He had nine years to find me.”

“Yes.”

“And didn’t.”

“Yes.”

“So I’m not going to run toward him now because he leaves a note.”

I understood.

But the clock on the wall kept moving.

Midnight approached whether we trusted Ji-hoon or not.

And Kang Jun had apparently hidden one record Lee Sang-ho feared enough to kill for.

Someone had the compass.

Someone knew where it pointed.

If Ji-hoon was telling the truth, the next secret might finally explain why so many people had spent twelve years ensuring Mary Lou never reached home.
