her.”

Park left.

Mary Lou’s fear returned instantly.

Choi crouched in front of her.

“If your mother has Kang Jun’s files, she will not understand what she carries.”

Mary Lou wiped blood from her lip.

“She understands enough.”

“You taught her?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

She stared at him.

Choi’s face hardened.

“Soo-jin.”

Mary Lou’s silence confirmed it.

He stood.

Han Jae tightened his grip on her arms.

Choi picked up his phone.

Mary Lou looked down.

The crash authorization lay beneath the desk.

Close.

Not close enough.

Unless—

She let her knees buckle.

Han Jae swore as her weight dropped.

In the confusion, Mary Lou kicked the paper beneath a filing cabinet.

Out of sight.

Not saved.

But hidden.

One document.

One chance.

Choi did not notice.

He was already speaking into the phone.

Giving orders.

Searching for me.

Searching for Soo-jin.

Mary Lou lifted her head.

For nine years, she had survived by being predictable.

Obedient enough.

Useful enough.

Afraid enough.

That strategy had ended.

Choi finished the call and looked down at her.

“Your mother has made this complicated.”

Mary Lou tasted blood again.

“No.”

She drew a slow breath.

“She made it simple.”

Choi frowned.

Mary Lou met his eyes.

“For twelve years, you thought I stayed because I was afraid of losing her.”

His expression changed.

She continued.

“You never considered what I might do once she finally came for me.”

Han Jae pulled her upright.

Choi stared at her for a long moment.

Then he gave an order.

Han dragged Mary Lou toward the warehouse floor.

She did not resist.

Not yet.

Behind them, hidden beneath the filing cabinet, Kang Jun’s crash authorization remained untouched.

Outside, an engine started.

Choi was sending men to find me.

And for the first time since my daughter had left America, I was no longer waiting for her to come home.

I was carrying the evidence that might let me bring her home myself.
