Enough to explain what happened to Kang Jun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t you hand it over years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause evidence isn\u2019t protection if the people receiving it can be bought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed a way to get it outside Korea without them knowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe eighty thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery annual transfer carried more than money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe payment references.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered seeing strings of numbers and banking abbreviations I never understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were account identifiers,\u201d she said. \u201cPieces of a map.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA map to what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccounts Choi doesn\u2019t know I found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve years of transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow the map is complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the warehouse tomorrow\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHolds the final records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe something they can\u2019t afford to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lou leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger that names everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound came from the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The footsteps halted outside our door.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lou reached beneath the table and pulled out a small kitchen knife I had not seen her take.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Someone touched the doorknob.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Once.<\/p>\n<p>Then again.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lou motioned for silence.<\/p>\n<p>A shadow crossed the narrow strip of light beneath the door.<\/p>\n<p>For perhaps ten seconds, nobody breathed.<\/p>\n<p>Then a woman\u2019s voice spoke in Korean.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lou\u2019s shoulders lowered.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the door a few inches.<\/p>\n<p>The guesthouse owner stood outside holding a folded towel.<\/p>\n<p>They exchanged a few words.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Lou accepted it and shut the door.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down weakly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is how you\u2019ve lived?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She set the knife on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the locker key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more nine years alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re going to that warehouse, I\u2019m going with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied to dangerous men for nine years.
